Discover the Rems-Murr District
Accommodation in Rems-Murr District
Hiking stages along the UNESCO World Heritage Limes, guided tours of local history and wine experiences offer a range of options in the Rems-Murr District. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you’d mainly like to spend time outdoors, discover towns and historic buildings, or experience wine. The relevant themes and places can then help you choose your accommodation.
Plan hiking trails and visits to the Limes
The Rems-Murr hiking trail is 50 kilometres long and can be hiked in three stages from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. You can download its route navigation to a smartphone. The entire trail is also well served by local public transport, so you don’t need a car to get there. If you choose accommodation along your planned hikes, the stage towns listed above provide a useful guide.
For trips to Limes sites, there is the seasonal Limesbus Nord, route 372. From May until the penultimate Sunday in October, it runs on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from Murrhardt via Grab and GroĂźerlach to Mainhardt and back. You can use the bus to hike to sites along the UNESCO World Heritage Limes or join tours led by Limes Cicerones. Check current services and operating days before travelling.
Cycling and local history
The Remstal cycle route starts at Endersbach station in Weinstadt and runs via Kernen and Fellbach towards Remseck am Neckar. It is around 106 kilometres long. For trip planning, this offers a distinctly different option alongside the 50-kilometre Rems-Murr hiking trail: a three-stage hiking route and a longer cycle route that starts in Endersbach.
Guided town tours also offer useful starting points for planning your trip. In Fellbach, a town walk through the centre takes in historic landmarks and award-winning architecture. In Backnang, historical tours follow in the footsteps of the Margraves as far as St. Pancras Collegiate Church, where the Margraves of Baden are buried. In Schorndorf, you can learn about the town’s history on guided walks.
In Murrhardt, a night watchman tells stories and legends by torchlight. The experience is also suitable for children, who can bring lanterns. This shared evening activity adds another way to get to know a place alongside hiking and local history. It’s a good idea to check current dates for guided activities in advance.
Wine tastings and regional landscapes
Fellbacher Weingärtner offers wine tastings, cellar tours and a snack at the Neue Kelter. The annual wine event, Weintreff, is held at the Alte Kelter Fellbach: a stylish tasting where numerous wine producers and other local food and drink artisans from the Remstal-Stuttgart region present their products. Check current dates for tours, tastings and events before your visit.
Further along the Remstal, rolling vineyards, expansive orchards and historic half-timbered towns shape the landscape. Other trails also lead through the region’s natural and cultural landscape: the FeenSpuren trails wind through the Swabian Forest and Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park, offering nature and landscape experiences while sharing information about the surroundings along the way. The Mühlenwanderweg (Mill Hiking Trail) passes 13 mills in the Swabian Forest.
The 180-kilometre Idyllische StraĂźe holiday route runs between Mainhardt and Alfdorf, and between Spiegelberg and AbtsgmĂĽnd. Away from major tourist routes, it passes old mills, swimming lakes, Limes remains and reconstructions. The Murrhardt Nature Park Centre provides visitor information about guided tours, events, markets and projects run by the Swabian-Franconian Forest Quality Nature Park Association.
Choose the right base
Consider which experiences matter most for your trip, and search for a suitable base near the places you’d like to visit. Check the accommodation’s location and current connections to your specific destinations.
