Winterbach combines a variety of walking trails with a historic town centre and engaging insights into the village’s history. When planning your trip, you can choose from routes with different themes, discover play facilities along the Rems riverbank, or take time to visit local cultural attractions. This lets you tailor your stay to what interests you most: outdoor activity, local history, or a cultural programme.

Walking and cycling routes in Winterbach

The “Wildes Lehenbachtal” circular trail is 7.1 kilometres long and starts at Winterbach outdoor swimming pool. The six-kilometre “Engelberger Panoramaweg” starts at Winterbach railway station. The third circular trail is the 5.6-kilometre “Wein- und Obstwanderweg”. It combines a walk with the themes of winegrowing and orchards, which are typical of Winterbach and the Rems Valley. The routes range from 5.6 to 7.1 kilometres; different starting points are also specified for the Wildes Lehenbachtal and Engelberger Panoramaweg trails. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider its theme, length, and starting point.

The Remstal cycle route also passes through Winterbach. Along its overall route of around 106 kilometres, it follows the renaturalised Rems here. This means that, alongside the circular trails, you can also enjoy riverside scenery. When planning your trip, the distinction between the local circular trails and the longer cycling route is a helpful starting point for deciding what you would like to focus on in Winterbach.

Discover local history and culture

The historic town centre includes St Michael’s Church, the Neptune Fountain on the market square, and three town halls. The various buildings and the fountain offer several historic points of interest in the centre. At the Winterbach Village and Local History Museum, you can learn about another aspect of the area’s history. It is housed in a building dating from 1776 that illustrates the layout of a typical local farmhouse. Living quarters, livestock, and storage were all arranged under one roof.

A few metres west of the museum stands the former Hafner pottery kiln shed. It was renovated in 1995/96 and is part of the museum. Examples of Hafner pottery are on display, and a potter’s wheel is set up and in working order. A museum visit thus combines a look at the construction of a historic farmhouse with insights into the Hafner pottery craft. The town centre and the museum offer different highlights: the former features its landmark buildings and squares, while the latter presents the history of domestic life and crafts.

Play facilities along the Rems and in the Lehenbach Valley

On the Rems riverbank by Gleisdorfer Platz, children can enjoy driftwood play equipment and a water fountain area. If you would also like to include a public barbecue and playground in your stay, Hindererstein is a car-free spot at the edge of the forest in the Lehenbach Valley, near the reservoir. The two locations differ in both setting and facilities: Gleisdorfer Platz centres on its play equipment and water fountain area, while Hindererstein combines a barbecue area with a play area.

The annual programme of the Winterbach Cultural Circle offers another way to experience the town. It includes visual arts, arts and crafts, theatre, music, and literature. These disciplines show the breadth of the cultural programme; you can check specific events and dates before your trip. Together with the historic town centre and the museum, the cultural offering provides several different themes for your stay.

More routes in the Rems-Murr district

In the Rems-Murr district, the 50-kilometre Rems-Murr hiking trail runs in three stages from Endersbach via Winnenden to Murrhardt. Its route navigation can be downloaded to a smartphone. Another longer route option is the approximately 106-kilometre Remstal cycle route. It starts at Endersbach railway station in Weinstadt and heads via Kernen and Fellbach towards Remseck am Neckar; in Winterbach, it follows the renaturalised Rems. This gives you the option of treating local circular trails and longer routes in the Rems-Murr district as different focuses for your trip.
