Hülben offers different ways to explore its landscape and history: the six-kilometre Celtic Adventure Trail runs through the late Celtic oppidum of Heidengraben, while hiking trails along the Albtrauf escarpment offer views across the valley. Other highlights include the story of a stalactite cave and the Dürrlau playground, about 500 metres outside the village. When planning your visit, it makes a difference whether you want to focus mainly on a themed trail, scenic views or a single place to play.

Celtic Adventure Trail and Albtrauf Escarpment

The six-kilometre Celtic Adventure Trail runs through the late Celtic oppidum of Heidengraben. An oppidum is a fortified settlement; the name gives the trail a clearly defined historical theme. You can explore the trail using a free multimedia app. Its length and digital interpretation make it a concrete way to connect the Celtic past with a walking route.

If you are more interested in scenery, consider the hiking trails along the Albtrauf escarpment: starting from Hülben, they follow the escarpment and offer views across the valley. Hiking trails from Hülben also lead to Hohenneuffen Castle. These offer two distinct hiking experiences: the Albtrauf trails focus on views across the valley, while Hohenneuffen is a specific destination for a hike.

Cave history and playground

A stalactite cave lies directly beneath State Road 250 at the entrance to Hülben from the direction of Bad Urach. It was discovered in September 1978 during road-widening work. This discovery adds a different period of history to the late Celtic theme: local history here is tied to a precisely dated event associated with the roadworks.

The “Dürrlau” playground is about 500 metres outside Hülben, surrounded by greenery. It has a climbing frame, a double swing, two spring riders, a seesaw, a playhouse and a play structure with a slide, fireman’s pole and suspension bridge. There are also balance beams, adjacent shrubs and hedges, and a barbecue area. For families, it is a practical addition if you want to include playtime alongside your hikes. Its location outside the village is also a factor to consider when planning your day.

Lichtenstein Castle was built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knights’ castle. The Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail runs from the castle along impressive scenic cliffs straight to Nebelhöhle Cave. Public transport does not run directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle. Check current connections when planning your trip.

In Münsingen, the Swabian Alb Biosphere Centre uses interactive exhibits and audio and video features to share information about the nature, landscape and people of the biosphere reserve. Its educational group activities include felting and planting, harvesting and cooking together; programme details may change. Münsingen’s Old Castle is also home to the town museum, which presents the history and culture of the Münsinger Alb.

TrÜP guides trained to lead tours take visitors across the former Münsingen military training area on individual tours or as part of a group on selected dates throughout the year. Dates and booking arrangements may change; check them before planning your visit.
