Römerstein offers a range of different experiences: in Donnstetten, winter sports and the summer toboggan run take center stage, while hiking landscapes, viewpoints and historic sites offer other points of interest. When planning your trip, it helps to first choose what you want to focus on. If snow activities are a priority, the season and snow conditions are important. If you are interested in the landscape and history, the routes and places described here offer a different way to guide your search for accommodation.

Snow Activities and Toboggan Run in Donnstetten

The Donnstetten ski area has three family-friendly runs, each 365 meters long. Four drag lifts take skiers up to an elevation of 850 meters above sea level. Skiing and lift operations depend on the season and snow conditions. Several clubs offer ski lessons at the Donnstetten ski lift; book directly with the respective club. Offers and booking options may change. Tobogganing is also possible on all ski slopes in Römerstein, provided seasonal snow conditions allow it.

The Donnstetten summer toboggan run offers a different kind of experience: riders control their own speed using side-mounted brake levers. Operating conditions and dates may vary. Together with the snow-dependent activities, this gives you a choice of different things to do, which you can prioritize when planning according to your travel dates and personal interests.

Cross-Country Ski Trails, a Circuit and Landscapes

Römerstein offers more than 60 kilometers of interconnected cross-country ski trails, allowing you to put together your own circuits. The Donnstetten trail starts at the Donnstetten ski lift, is twelve kilometers long and connects to the Alb-Bad trail in Westerheim. The Römerstein circuit is 20 kilometers long, has 200 meters of elevation gain, and starts and ends at the parking lot of the sports and events hall in Böhringen.

On the “Römerstein Tower – A View of the Whole Picture” hike, karst landscapes and mustard-colored meadows transform the scenery. Their seasonal appearance may vary. Kanzel also provides a striking geological feature: this limestone formation, lined with beech trees, lies on a slope edge. South of the Aussiedlerhof farmstead, Hasenhäusle hill offers a view of the Alb village of Donnstetten. Donnstetten itself lies in a maar, a volcanic crater. Thus, a relatively small area brings together a range of landscapes and perspectives, without requiring them to be combined into a single route.

The Tower and Local History

Römerstein Tower is the landmark of Römerstein. It stands between Böhringen and Donnstetten at an elevation of 874 meters and offers panoramic views across the Swabian Alb. The Swabian Alb Association built it in 1912 on the highest point of the central Alb. Its timber-clad wooden structure stands on a solid base story. Its construction date, location and design give the observation tower its own historic and architectural character.

The Donnstetten Local History Museum shows how people lived and worked around 1900. Zainingen has a large Hüle (village pond) and a late medieval fortified church. There is also a group of burial mounds dating from the Hallstatt period. These topics offer different ways to explore local history: from everyday life around 1900 to a historic form of church architecture and an archaeological site.

More Destinations in the Reutlingen Destination Region

The wider Reutlingen destination region also offers its own cultural and nature-related attractions. In Zwiefalten, the Minster of Our Lady is the focal point of the old monastery and pilgrimage town; it is one of the notable examples of German Late Baroque architecture. Concerts are held in the minster every year, with dates varying. Lichtenstein Castle was built between 1840 and 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. From there, the Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail leads along scenic cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle cave. These destinations expand the options in the wider destination region, but are separate places to visit alongside Römerstein’s attractions.
