In Hettingen, medieval architectural history meets carnival culture. Hettingen Castle preserves traces of different eras, the parish church tells of a long ecclesiastical history, and the Narrenburg Carnival Museum explores customs from both European and regional perspectives. The town is also set in the Lauchert Valley. This gives you several specific points of interest to consider when planning a trip that combines culture and landscape.

The Lauchert Valley and its routes

The district of Hettingen lies in the Lauchert Valley, the “Blue Ribbon of the Swabian Alb,” directly on the Hohenzollern Road and the Danube-Zollernalb Trail. This location gives travellers a clear sense of orientation when exploring Hettingen through its landscape and routes. The parish church, castle and museum add their own cultural focus.

Church and castle history

Hettingen Parish Church is a late Gothic building. It was dedicated to St Martin in 1401 and elevated to a collegiate church in 1503 through a foundation by Hans Kaspar von Bubenhofen. These two dates mark distinct stages in its history: its consecration and its later elevation to a collegiate church. The church is therefore one of the town’s distinctive historical landmarks.

At Hettingen Castle, the tall northern shield wall is all that remains of the medieval castle complex of the Counts of Gammertingen-Hettingen. The castle’s residential building was newly constructed around 1720 by Franz-Anton von Speth. A medieval keep and a Romanesque castle gate were incorporated into the new building. This single complex thus brings together remnants of the former castle and a later residential building whose origins can be dated.

The interior also features precise architectural details: a three-flight wooden staircase dating from the building’s construction leads to the upper floors, with heraldic figures on its posts. The stucco ceilings depict landscapes and allegorical scenes within richly ornamental frames. Some ceilings also feature stucco work from the Rococo period, around 1770. The staircase and ceilings add distinctive details alongside the medieval structural elements and the history of the new building.

Carnival from European and regional perspectives

The Narrenburg Carnival Museum is dedicated to European carnival customs across around 400 square metres of exhibition space. It presents different facets of Fastnacht, Fasching and Carnival, as well as their background and cultural context. Across two floors, modern displays showcase carnival traditions and forms of expression from a European perspective, alongside the regional Fastnacht of the Alb-Lauchert-Ring. The museum thus brings together a broad view of festive traditions and a regional perspective. For travellers interested in culture and customs, it is another distinctive attraction alongside the church and castle.
