Hohentengen, also known colloquially as Göge, is a small regional centre in the Lake Constance–Upper Swabia region, with around 4,200 residents. Chapels, trails and viewpoints shape the local discovery experience: the town’s history ranges from a more than 500-year-old Marienkapelle to St. Michael’s Church, while walking and cycling routes offer different ways to explore the surrounding area. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture, outdoor activity or scenery as separate themes.

Landscape between the Danube, Ostrach and Swabian Alb

Hohentengen lies in a glacial terminal moraine landscape at elevations of between 564 and 594 metres above sea level. The geological term places the surrounding area within a landscape shaped by the Ice Age. A prominent viewpoint is Kugelberg, above Hohentengen: from there, views stretch across the Danube and Ostrach valleys towards the Swabian Alb. Alongside the historic buildings, the valleys and far-reaching views are also distinct reasons to visit.

If you enjoy combining different themes when planning a trip, you can explore local history and the landscape separately or together. The chapels tell of the region’s religious past; trails and viewpoints offer another way to experience the surroundings. Kugelberg adds to this picture with views across two valleys towards the Swabian Alb.

Churches, chapels and local history

St. Michael’s Church in Hohentengen was built between 1848 and 1852 in the Neo-Gothic style. It was erected on the site of an older church. Another historic landmark is the Marienkapelle on the Steige, which is more than 500 years old. It was once a frequently visited pilgrimage site. The two buildings represent different chapters in the local religious history and date from different periods.

An event from 1799 is also part of local memory: commemorative plaques at the northern entrance to the cemetery recall the Hohentengen meeting. These landmarks can be connected in your mind with the Göge chapels, which are accessible via well-maintained footpaths. Some of these paths follow paved side roads. The municipal chapel tour also includes several viewpoints.

Getting around on foot or by bike

The footpaths to the chapels and the chapel tour offer different ways to explore on foot. If you are planning a bike ride, there is a chapel loop of around 15.5 kilometres. There is also a four-kilometre cycling route that passes the Enzkofer Berg recreation area and a viewpoint by the water reservoir. The distances show that the two routes differ in length; the shorter loop also has its own landmarks, Enzkofer Berg and the water reservoir.

Before setting out, it is worth checking the current route and local conditions. This applies to the cycling routes as well as access to viewpoints, since accessibility may change. This allows you to plan your day around local conditions rather than assuming a specific duration or an unchanged route.

Accommodation and trip planning

If you are looking for accommodation in Hohentengen, your planned activities can help guide your choice: would you mainly like to visit the historic chapels and churches, explore on foot or take one of the cycling routes? The landscape around Kugelberg may also be a factor in planning your trip. Before you start searching, consider which of these themes you would like to shape your days. Hohentengen can be reached via the B32 towards Mengen; check current traffic conditions and road arrangements before setting off.

A cultural highlight in Sigmaringen

In the wider travel destination of Sigmaringen, Sigmaringen Castle offers a distinct historical focus. A medieval castle developed into a princely residence and is considered a landmark of the town. Castle tours present almost 1,000 years of Hohenzollern family history. This cultural highlight belongs to Sigmaringen and is not part of Hohentengen’s local history; rather, it offers a separate perspective within the wider travel destination.
