Discover Illmensee: lido and hiking routes
Accommodation in Illmensee
Illmensee offers a starting point for a variety of holiday activities: the lido in the town centre, paths right by the water and named glacial trails. There is also a boules court in front of the Drei-Seen-Halle. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you want to focus on swimming and play or on hiking.
By the lake: water, play and activity
Illmensee lido is in the town centre. Its facilities include swimming and non-swimming areas, boat hire, mini golf and a beach volleyball court. Spacious sunbathing lawns and a large adventure playground with water and sand play round out the activities by the water. This gives you a choice of swimming, land-based activities and play. To go fishing, you can hire rowing boats on Lake Illmensee; check current availability before you arrive.
Hiking trails with different starting points
The circular trail around Lake Illmensee runs right along the shore. The “Uferrunde” glacial trail is about 4.5 km long. This approximate distance can help you plan your hike. Another option is to combine the “Kantenlauf” and “DerHöchste” glacial trails to create a premium hiking trail. The municipality also includes the Swabian-Alemannic Dialect Trail with its Path of Prominent Figures; this route is listed as 1 km long.
A distinctive feature in town
A purpose-built boules court has stood in front of the Drei-Seen-Halle since 2021. It offers something different alongside the lido and hiking options. The town centre, lakeside path and named routes give you a range of ways to spend your time in Illmensee, without every stay having to follow the same itinerary.
Culture and nature in the wider destination of Sigmaringen
The wider destination also includes Sigmaringen, with its own cultural and natural attractions. Sigmaringen Castle developed from a medieval fortress into a princely residential palace and is regarded as a symbol of the town. Guided tours of the castle explore almost 1,000 years of Hohenzollern family history. The castle’s private collection of arms comprises around 3,000 objects.
The landscape is another highlight: the DonauFelsenLäufe are five premium hiking trails in Sigmaringen. They lead through the Danube Valley, the Schmeien Valley and the Lauchert Valley. Those interested in regional traditions can attend Sigmaringen’s annual Fidelis Festival: on 24 April, it includes a church service at St. Johann parish church followed by a candlelit procession through the town centre. Sigmaringen’s weekly market offers regional products such as baked goods, meat and sausages, fruit and vegetables, cheese, olive oil and honey.
Choose accommodation to suit your plans
Anglers should check whether rowing boats are available before arriving. You can then tailor your search to the experiences that matter most to you during your stay in Illmensee.
