Aldingen offers two different starting points for a trip: a challenging cycling tour with a destination on the Heuberg and a museum that you need to arrange to visit in advance. This lets you include outdoor exercise and a planned cultural visit in your itinerary.

Cycle up to the Heuberg

The Donaubergland Lemberger Höhenrausch cycling tour is a challenging ride. It starts in the valley in Aldingen and climbs from there to the Heuberg and the Lemberg near Gosheim. The Lemberg is the highest mountain in the Swabian Alb, giving the tour a clearly defined starting point and a distinctive destination.

The Donaubikeland Lemberger Höhenrausch cycling tour is also described as a circular route. It passes through Aldingen, Denkingen, Gosheim, Wehingen, Deilingen, Schörzingen, Wilflingen and Frittlingen before returning to Aldingen. Along with its challenging character, the route and the sequence of towns are useful for planning. The route description was updated in 2022; as route conditions can change, check the current route before setting off.

Visit the Aldingen Museum by appointment

The Aldingen Museum currently has no regular opening hours and is accessible only by appointment arranged by email at gemeinde@aldingen.de. Plan your visit as a scheduled appointment and arrange it in advance using this address. Unlike a trip focused on cycling, a museum visit requires you to make contact before you go.

In Tuttlingen District: a changing landscape

Tuttlingen District covers a total of 734.4 square kilometres and encompasses the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Alb, parts of the Baar and the valley of the Young Danube. The northern part features juniper heaths and the 10-Tausender region, with ten mountains over 1,000 metres high. White limestone cliffs rise above the Danube Valley, and the Danube Gorge is another of the district’s scenic highlights. The Höwenegg volcanic crater adds another distinctive landscape feature.

These regional attractions offer different ways to shape your trip, from mountain ridges and juniper heaths to cliffs and geological features. In October 2022, Mühlheim Rock Cave became the first cave in the Swabian Alb to be designated a Geopoint by UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb. The natural scenery at the Danube Sinkhole, between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen, can change from day to day: the Danube may carry a lot of water, be completely dry in some places, or carry only a little water.

Culture and activities in other places

The Neuhausen ob Eck Open-Air Museum features 25 historic buildings. They were dismantled at their original locations, moved to the museum and restored to their original condition. The upper floors of the Künstlerhaus Scharf Eck in Fridingen house a museum about Hans Bucher, a painter of the Danube Valley; three floors showcase his life and work. The Museum of the Upper Danube Valley in Ifflinger Castle combines changing special exhibitions with permanent exhibitions on the town’s history, the history of its rulers, archaeology, carnival traditions and more recent history.

There are also different options for outdoor activities in the district. Arena Geisingen offers a 30,000-square-metre outdoor area with a road course, beer garden, slacklining, a beach volleyball court and other facilities; access to specific offerings may vary. At Rabenfels in the Bära Valley, the climbing areas between the routes “Mister Wendl” and “Gebrüderweg” are open from 1 August to 31 December. Check the current regulations before visiting.

Mühlheim an der Donau lies directly on the International Danube Cycle Path, which runs to the Danube’s mouth at the Black Sea and can also be ridden in short stages. For a walking option, the premium hiking trail “Danube Sinkhole” runs between Tuttlingen-Möhringen and Immendingen. These examples differ both in activity and location, so you can choose according to your travel interests.

Choose accommodation based on your destinations

For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish Aldingen as the location of the museum and as the starting and return point for the cycling tours described here from the other destinations in Tuttlingen District. If you also want to include other places and activities in the district, consider their respective locations when choosing where to stay.
