Old trees and village ponds, a Kneipp facility, marked hiking trails and St. James’s Church reveal different sides of Weihenzell. You can tailor your stay to whether you prefer spending time outdoors, are looking for water-based activities or are interested in architectural history.

Floodplain landscape, Kneipp facility and outdoor pool

The floodplain landscape in Weihenzell combines mature trees with two village ponds. It is accessible without barriers from both the town centre and the multi-purpose hall. If you rely on particular path conditions, it is best to check the specific situation before your visit.

The Kneipp foot-treading pool is accompanied by a raised herb bed based on Kneipp’s teachings. The Kneipp facility also includes a 14-metre barefoot path. The Kneipp pool can also be used in winter; in unusually severe weather, check local conditions. Another option for spending time by the water is the Weihenzell outdoor pool. It has a heated pool with a non-swimmer area. Check the pool’s operating status before setting out.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

Seven circular hiking trails marked according to Frankenhöhe Nature Park guidelines, WZ 1 to WZ 7, start in Weihenzell, Haasgang and Thurndorf. For a specific comparison of trail lengths, consider the WZ 2 Hirschkäfer circular hiking trail: it is 10.6 kilometres long; its alternative route, which is 4.4 kilometres shorter, skips a scenic stretch through Tierbach. This lets you choose based on the distance and whether you want to include this stretch. Check the current route before setting out.

The Way of St. James also combines exercise with a cultural destination: Weihenzell, with its St. James’s Church, is a stop on the 80-kilometre marked route from Nuremberg to Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The church can draw attention to the history of the place; at the same time, the route continues beyond Weihenzell and places it within a longer journey.

St. James’s Church: Gothic tower and Baroque nave

The oldest part of today’s St. James’s Church is its four-storey Gothic tower, dating from the 14th or 15th century. The nave was demolished in 1712/1713 because it had fallen into disrepair and rebuilt slightly offset beside the old tower, under the direction of Ansbach court building director Gabriel de Gabrieli. The hall church, with its recessed choir, was designed in the Baroque style. The building thus brings together two clearly distinguishable phases: the older tower and the nave built later. Anyone interested in architecture will find a concrete reason here to see the church not only as a stop on the Way of St. James, but also as a building with its own history.

More topics in the wider Ansbach destination

The wider Ansbach destination includes other places and topics in their own right. In Wolframs-Eschenbach, the 2.2-kilometre, fully accessible Franken literary trail runs in a loop around the town fortifications. Its 15 information boards feature authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works explore Franconia. The “wiegen & messen” museum in Königshofen displays more than 4,000 exhibits, including historic scales, their associated weights, measuring rods, yardsticks and vessels used to measure grain.

Frankenhöhe Nature Park covers about 1,100 square kilometres across the districts of Ansbach and Neustadt a.d. Aisch–Bad Windsheim, as well as the independent city of Ansbach. Its landscape is particularly suited to recreation; the nature park provides information on hiking and cycling trails as well as ranger-led tours. It is also the source region of the Altmühl, the Fränkische Rezat and the Zenn. These examples offer a different focus from the attractions in Weihenzell. If you want to base your accommodation choice on a particular excursion destination, include that place in your plans and choose the focus that best suits your stay.
