Mömbris: The Kahl, Hahnenkamm and Pilgrimage Routes
Accommodation in Mömbris
Along the Kahl, the terrain in Mömbris changes from flat areas to partly steep climbs up to Hahnenkamm. This contrast between flatter sections and higher elevations shapes the landscape around the town. The area also offers pilgrimages to Walldürn and back, circular routes for different types of activity, and individual places of historical or commemorative significance. Depending on the focus of your trip, the main attractions are the landscape, religious tradition, physical activity or local history.
When looking for accommodation in Mömbris, it helps to decide first what you are visiting for. If a pilgrimage is the focus of your trip, the dates around Pentecost are important; for running and walking plans, the stated route distances provide a guide. Historic sites and the memorial place offer other points of interest.
Pilgrimages around Pentecost
The pilgrimage starting at the Catholic Parish of St. Cyriakus and Valentinus in Mömbris takes place on the weekend after Pentecost. It covers four stages from Friday through Monday, going to Walldürn and back. It is held annually, and it is possible to take part on individual days. The exact date depends on Pentecost, so bear this in mind when planning your trip. This lets you choose between the multi-day pilgrimage and joining for individual days.
Since 2004, a cycling pilgrimage from Mömbris to Walldürn has also taken place on the Sunday after Pentecost. There are repeated breaks along the way, with spiritual reflections. Unlike the multi-day pilgrimage on foot, this is a single Sunday event; the two options therefore differ both in duration and mode of travel. If one of the pilgrimages is the reason for your trip, check the relevant Pentecost date.
Circular routes, local landmarks and a rest in Schimborn
There are three circular routes around Mömbris for runners, Nordic walkers and walkers. The signposted running routes offer distances between 2.75 and 10 km. The 10 km Panorama Route can be shortened using three differently marked route options. The running routes therefore offer a specific range of distances, while the Panorama Route also has several options for shortening the distance.
The historic double mill on the Kahl in Strötzbach is a popular photo spot. Only the site of Mömbris Castle remains; the clearly visible plateau lies east of the old cemetery in Mömbris. The memorial place in the district of Schimborn offers a different kind of attraction: it can be reached on foot or by bicycle from two sides and has a sturdy bench and a seating area for resting and spending time. A photo spot, a visible trace of the castle and a place to take a break thus offer three different ways to experience the area.
Cycling and hiking trails in the wider Aschaffenburg travel destination
Another option is to explore the wider Aschaffenburg travel destination. The family-friendly Main Cycle Route runs through the Main Valley in the Aschaffenburg district and is well signposted. The Kahltal-Spessart Cycle Route is a signposted cycling route through the district’s landscapes. For hiking, Spessart Trails 1, 2 and 3 run through the district; they have been awarded the “Qualitätswege Wanderbares Deutschland” quality trail designation by the German Hiking Association four times. There are also more than 30 hiking tours on the cultural trails created by the Archaeological Spessart Project. These regional options offer a different focus from the circular routes and local landmarks in Mömbris: cycling on signposted routes, hiking on the award-winning Spessart Trails or on the cultural trails.
