Hilgertshausen-Tandern combines routes through the landscape with insights into natural and cultural history. The BesteGegend Path leads to various facets of the town and its surroundings: the Fahrtbach Valley, historic buildings and the Orchard Experience. You can also explore Hilgertshausen and Tandern by bike. This lets you tailor your stay to whether you would rather hike, cycle, or learn about the landscape and its history.

Circular route, extension and the Fahrtbach Valley

The BesteGegend Path is a six-kilometre circular route. An extension leads into the countryside to the Fahrtbach Valley and adds 2.5 kilometres to the loop. An alternative route into the Fahrtbach Valley is also integrated into the path. This means there are different route options: you can treat the loop as an outing in its own right or plan for the additional stretch into the valley. Check the signs on site if you want to follow the extension.

The Fahrtbach Valley covers 6.6 hectares and is the most important component of a biotope network in the Tandern land consolidation area. It is a habitat for many birds and mammals. The term “biotope network” refers to the valley’s importance within a network of habitats. This ecological perspective adds to the route itself: the valley is not only a destination along the route, but also a natural area with a clearly defined role in the biotope network.

Traces of history and fruit growing

The BesteGegend Path includes the “Orchard Experience.” It was created by the Fruit and Horticulture Association on the compensatory area of the newly opened fire station. The Vollmair House, one of the historic buildings along the path, is also on the route in Tandern. Along with its scenic course, these stops connect the route with local history and community work.

Daumillerberg lies near Tandern. In the 1950s and 1960s, it served as a hill for learning to ski and became known as a “cult spot” in Rosenmüller’s film “Beste Gegend.” The film connection and its former use place the hill in a different era from today’s route descriptions of the BesteGegend Path.

Cycling through Hilgertshausen and Tandern

Another way to explore the area is to take the extension of the Ilm Valley Tour: it runs from Jetzendorf via Hilgertshausen and Tandern to AltomĂĽnster station, and includes a detour to the source of the Tanderner Ilm. Its route differs from the BesteGegend Path loop: here, the focus is on a longer connection through several named places and the detour to the source. Check for current route information before setting off.

More nature and culture in the Dachau destination

The wider Dachau destination offers other distinct nature and culture experiences. The Karlsfeld Lake recreation area covers 58.2 hectares, lies directly next to the built-up area of northern Karlsfeld, and is in the district of Dachau. It is used year-round for walking, jogging, cycling and recreation. In the Amper floodplains, with patience and a little luck, you can observe the feeding marks of the beaver, which has returned to the area. These examples add two different nature experiences to the picture of Dachau: recreation by the lake and looking for signs of wildlife in the floodplains.

Culture and art also have their own settings in the Dachau destination. On Petersberg near Erdweg stands a Romanesque basilica built in 1104 and preserved to this day. The 200-metre-long sculpture trail leads through Petersberg Forest; there are ten artworks in total at eight stations. The Altomünster Museum’s permanent exhibition is devoted to the history of the Order of Saint Birgitta in Europe and its founder, Saint Birgitta of Sweden. It also covers the history of the Altomünster Monastery, which has existed for 500 years and is now closed. These different themes help you choose between nature trails, art in the forest and the history of a religious order, without confusing them with the local attractions in Hilgertshausen-Tandern.

Choose the right focus for your stay

The local highlights in Hilgertshausen-Tandern are the BesteGegend Path, the Fahrtbach Valley, the Ilm Valley Tour and the historical connections around Tandern. If you also want to consider other destinations in the wider Dachau area, you can take these interests into account separately when choosing where to go.
