Großweil lies on the Loisach and is surrounded by an idyllic landscape of lakes and moorland. The Glentleiten Open-Air Museum is also located here. Nature and a distinctive cultural-history attraction thus come together; a short circular trail, a natural swimming pool and a section of a cycle route add to the range of ways to spend your holiday.

Open-air museum and everyday history

The Glentleiten Open-Air Museum lies at an altitude of about 750 metres and is the largest open-air museum in southern Bavaria. It is a special point of reference in Großweil if you are interested in the history of rural life. At Wagnerhäusl, tactile objects, texts and audio stations convey what life and work were like on a small farmstead in the second half of the 19th century. The clearly defined period and the focus on small farmsteads give the visit a specific historical focus.

There are also several named places to stop for a break at the museum: guests can enjoy Bavarian specialities, coffee and cake at Glentleiten Wirtschaft & Brauerei, in the Kramerladen shop or in the beer garden by the Salettl pavilion. This means you can make the food and drink offering part of your museum visit, rather than making it a separate stop outside the museum grounds.

Hiking, swimming and cycling

The Loisach circular trail near Großweil is an easy, 8.12-kilometre circular hiking route. The start and finish are at the Loisach bridge in Großweil. Its length, circular route and difficulty level make it a clearly defined hiking option. You can make it the main focus of a day outdoors or set it alongside a visit to the open-air museum.

Großweil natural swimming pool offers fun for the whole family, a spacious sunbathing lawn and changing rooms on site. Swimming is therefore another way to spend time outdoors, distinct from hiking through the landscape. For cyclists, the section of the Lake Constance–Königssee Cycle Route runs from Grafenaschau to Großweil. The route section’s connection to the village is thus just as clearly stated as the circular route for hikers.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen: nature and culture

In the wider destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, visitors walk through the Partnach Gorge between towering rock walls and the water rushing below. It was declared a natural monument and opened to visitors in 1912. Also in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Richard Strauss Institute is housed in the historic Villa Christina in Partenkirchen’s spa gardens; a permanent exhibition there is devoted to Strauss’s life and work. At 1,780 metres, Wank, Partenkirchen’s local mountain, is ideal for leisurely mountain hikes with far-reaching views. The Werdenfels Museum was founded in 1895 from a private collection and is now one of the most important museums of its kind in Bavaria; on walks through Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you can also discover Lüftlmalerei murals on house facades.
