Discover Ohlstadt
Accommodation in Ohlstadt
Ohlstadt lies at the foot of the 1,790-metre-high Heimgarten and on the edge of the Murnauer Moos nature reserve. The area around the village brings together natural attractions, historic cultural sites and a family swimming pool; nearby, you can also take the ridge hike to Herzogstand. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether mountains, water, culture or a day at the pool should be the focus of your trip.
Mountains and water around Ohlstadt
Heimgarten is the main mountain accessible from Ohlstadt and has a hut that is open in summer. This seasonal opening is a useful point of reference when planning a day in the mountains. The ridge hike from Heimgarten to Herzogstand passes over the 1,790-metre-high Heimgarten and the 1,731-metre-high Herzogstand and takes about 1.5 hours. In the area near Ohlstadt, it offers a specific way to link the two peaks on one hike.
The circular trail to the Kaltwasser waterfalls offers a different natural highlight. It follows the Kaltwasserlaine stream and gives you a glimpse of the mountain stream and its picturesque cascades. While the ridge hike is guided by the two mountains and the approximate walking time, this route focuses on the course of the water. Trail conditions may vary, so take this into account when planning.
After the ridge hike, you can return to Ohlstadt by taking the chairlift from Herzogstand to Walchensee, then travelling by bus via Kochel. Check the operating conditions for the chairlift and bus before your trip.
Culture and tradition
The Hagrain Chapel is a historic landmark in Ohlstadt: it was built in 1765 and dedicated to Saint Stephen, patron saint of whetstone makers. Another cultural highlight is the grinding mill, rebuilt based on historical models. You can learn more there on regular opening days; opening arrangements vary by season. So check the relevant dates before your trip.
The studio at Kaulbach Villa also has its own artistic focus. Today it serves as a museum, offering insights into the subjects and working methods of the artist Friedrich August von Kaulbach. Together with the chapel and the grinding mill, it adds an insight into the work of an individual artist to Ohlstadt’s cultural offerings.
Demonstrations, presentations and stud shows are held throughout the year at the Schwaiganger State Stud. Carriage rides and horse-drawn sleigh rides are also offered at the stud. If you would like to plan one of these rides, confirm current availability in advance. The demonstrations and rides offer different ways to engage with the stud.
A day at the pool with plenty of options
The Ohlstadt family swimming pool has a combined swimming and non-swimming pool, a children’s paddling pool, a 12,000 m² sunbathing lawn, a children’s playground and a beach volleyball court. There are several activities to choose from for a day at the pool: swimming and paddling, as well as playing or beach volleyball. For families who want to accommodate different interests when planning a trip, these facilities offer a practical point of reference. Check the current opening days before visiting.
