Explore Eschenlohe via striking gorges, circular hikes and trails through the Murnauer Moos. The Asam Gorge features rugged, steep rock faces; other tour destinations include the Seven Springs and the Archtal Gorge. Local history can also be a focus, for example at St. Nicholas Chapel and the Hartsteinwerk permanent exhibition. To plan your trip, you can compare hiking and cycling options by length, stated difficulty level and starting point.

Hiking: Gorge, Springs and History

The hike over the Katzensteg and to the Asam Gorge bridge starts and ends at Eschenlohe station, Bahnhofstraße 15. It climbs via the Katzensteg to the bridge, which offers a view into the gorge. The steep, rugged rock faces define the character of the Asam Gorge and make the landscape the focal point of this hike.

Another circular hike leads to the Seven Springs, through the Archtal Gorge and over the Asam Gorge bridge. It is 7.74 kilometres long, rated easy and designated as a family tour. Shorter is the 5.40-kilometre circular trail to the historical Hartsteinwerk permanent exhibition in Eschenlohe. Its difficulty level and fitness requirements are both listed as very easy. This offers a choice of different tour profiles: a longer loop with springs and a gorge, and a shorter, very easy hike with the exhibition as its destination.

Cycling and Other Trails

The cycling tour through the Murnauer Moos is a 28.34-kilometre circular route. It runs from Eschenlohe via Grafenaschau and Murnau, then back to Eschenlohe. The start and finish are at the car park by the Eschenlohe exit on the A95 motorway. The tour is listed as very easy in difficulty, with very easy fitness requirements; it is suitable for cycling, gravel biking and mountain biking. This makes it easy to assess both by the type of cycling you want to do and by its clearly described circular route.

In addition to these individual routes, more than 30 trails run through Eschenlohe and can be used on foot, by bicycle or on cross-country skis. More than 20 day trips also start in the village or pass through Eschenlohe with a stop along the way. The information describes different ways of getting around: trails with different uses, as well as day trips that start or stop in the village.

Local History and Further Impressions

St. Nicholas Chapel on the Vestbichl in Eschenlohe was built in 1628 by Abbot Ottmar of Ettal from the remains of a ruined castle tower. Its exact year of construction and its origins in the remains of the tower give the chapel a tangible connection to local history.

In the wider travel destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Partnach Gorge offers a nature experience of its own: visitors walk between massive rock faces and the water rushing below. In 1912, the gorge was declared a natural monument and opened to visitors. Cultural attractions are also part of this wider destination. The Richard Strauss Institute is housed in the historic Villa Christina in Partenkirchen’s spa gardens and has a permanent exhibition about Strauss’s life and work. The Werdenfels Museum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was founded in 1895 from a private collection; in the Zugspitze room, visitors can see the original 150-kilogram summit cross from the Zugspitze.
