Discover Burtenbach
Accommodation in Burtenbach
Burtenbach offers specific points of interest for a stay combining local history with time outdoors. The present-day town hall was built in 1558 for 2,000 gulden. The castle’s history spans a fire in 1731 and its reconstruction in its present form by 1740. The wider Günzburg destination offers further opportunities for culture, nature and activities to enjoy together.
Local history in Burtenbach
The town hall and castle represent different chapters in Burtenbach’s architectural history. The castle burned down in 1731. Franz Marquard Eusebius Freiherr Schertel von Burtenbach had it rebuilt in its present form by 1740. Together with the town hall, built in 1558, they provide two specific historical points of reference that help place the town’s history in context.
The public library is also associated with a particular building: Since September 1999, Burtenbach has once again had a library in the former schoolhouse. In spring 2006, an additional room measuring 44 square metres was added, increasing the total area to around 110 square metres. The town hall, castle and former schoolhouse reveal different aspects of local history.
Routes and water
Marked walking and cycling routes run between Burtenbach and Kemnat along district road GZ 1. They help you find your way if you want to include a route between the two places in your stay.
At the western exit from Burtenbach, in the direction of Kemnat and north of district road GZ 1, there is a quarry lake developed as a swimming lake with a sunbathing lawn, jetty, toilets and parking areas. Check the condition of the facilities before visiting. This lets you consider the marked routes and the lake as different ways to spend time outdoors.
Culture and nature in the wider GĂĽnzburg destination
The wider Günzburg destination offers everything from museum visits to hiking trails and distinctive cultural sites. In Ichenhausen, the Bavarian School Museum presents the development of the school system over thousands of years. The museum includes a historic classroom that once accommodated around 50 children. Offering a different perspective on the past, the Museum of the City of Burgau presents the town’s history from the Middle Ages to the recent past across two floors and more than 700 square metres.
The Maria Vesperbild pilgrimage site near Ziemetshausen in the district of GĂĽnzburg adds its own cultural highlight. It is considered the largest pilgrimage site in Bavarian Swabia and draws 400,000 to 500,000 pilgrims each year to the image of Our Lady of Sorrows. A Way of the Cross leads from the pilgrimage church to the Fatima Grotto in the nearby forest. The grotto was built in 1957 and restored in 2011; more than 1,000 votive plaques bearing words of thanks and testimonies to help received from the Mother of God stand there.
The Günzburg destination offers a variety of hiking routes to compare in terms of length and type. The DonAuwald hiking trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and runs for around 60 kilometres between Günzburg and Schwenningen. The DonauHänge, by contrast, is an 18.5-kilometre circular trail between Günzburg and Offingen through the hillside forest. For a shorter nature experience with plenty of stops, the Hansenhohl nature trail offers around 1.5 kilometres of walking and eight play and information stations. Winter visits are discouraged because of the risk of slipping. Also available is the free quiz tour “Sabotage im Hansenhohl” (Sabotage in Hansenhohl), a crime mystery app; check whether it is currently available.
The Ichenhausen Celtic Trail offers another thematic change of pace. Starting at the cemetery car park, it uses six listening points to bring the lives of the Celts and Druids to life through audio. The route is three kilometres from the first to the last listening point; audio stop 6 is currently inaccessible. Check the current route status before visiting.
For active pursuits, the Günzburg destination also has the Turncable Wakepark in Thannhausen, where you can go wakeboarding and water skiing. Courses are aimed at beginners and advanced participants, as well as individuals and groups; check course availability separately. LEGOLAND® Deutschland in Günzburg offers a different kind of outing: the theme park features eleven themed lands and 68 attractions, with MINILAND as its centrepiece. The theme park and its adjoining holiday village offer experiences for children aged 2 to 12. The attractions mentioned are located in the wider Günzburg destination.
