Ichenhausen brings together Bavarian school history, Jewish cultural heritage and an audio trail exploring the Celts. The town offers several different ways to plan your stay, from a museum visit and historic sites of remembrance to a tour with listening stops.

School history in the castle

The Bavarian School Museum is located in Ichenhausen Castle. Its exhibition focuses on Bavarian school history since the 19th century. An exhibition that opened in 2026 explores the history of Jewish education in Bavaria from the Middle Ages to the present day. Models, historical photographs, interviews and interactive exhibits offer insights into the subject across around 200 square metres. These different formats provide various ways to engage with a long historical period.

The museum also has a historic classroom that once accommodated around 50 children. It adds a tangible space from the past to its themes of everyday school life and the history of education.

Former synagogue and Jewish cemetery

The former Ichenhausen Synagogue was built in 1781 in the neoclassical style. Its present-day appearance dates to an extensive renovation and restoration carried out from 1985 to 1987. Today, the building serves as a meeting place and houses the permanent exhibition “Jews in the Countryside – The Example of Ichenhausen”. A ritual bath, a mikveh, can be viewed in the basement. Check the current opening hours before your visit.

Around 900 gravestones and the Tahara House have been preserved in the Jewish cemetery. If you would like to visit, check with the town beforehand for the current opening hours. Together with the exhibition in the former synagogue, the site offers another way to explore Ichenhausen’s Jewish history.

History to listen to

The Ichenhausen Celtic audio tour starts at the car park by the cemetery. At five listening stops, it uses audio to introduce the lives of the Celts and Druids. Listening is at the heart of the experience: rather than learning about the subject solely through an exhibition, visitors engage with it along the tour route.
