Thannhausen brings together Baroque church art, local history and an art trail with wakeboarding and water skiing at Turncable. This offers two distinct focal points for planning: exploring the town’s cultural history and enjoying active time on the water.

Baroque Architecture and Local History

The Catholic parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1742 by Thannhausen church architect Johann Kaspar Radmiller. Several artistic styles come together in its Baroque hall: frescoes by J. Christ, changing main altar paintings by Franz Xaver Abele, side altar paintings by Konrad Huber, a Crucifixion painting by L. Hundertpfund, and choir stalls by Thannhausen cabinetmaker Ferdinand Zech. This combination of works makes the church a varied subject for anyone interested in sacred art and Baroque design.

Another historical landmark stands at the eastern entrance to town: St. Leonhard’s Chapel dates from around 1600 and is one of the city’s oldest buildings. A monument created by F. Miller has stood in the square in front of the town hall since 1901, commemorating Christoph von Schmid. From 1796 to 1816, he worked in Thannhausen as a writer, benefice holder and school director, and wrote “Ostereier” and “Ihr Kinderlein kommet.” Architectural history and literary remembrance are part of the same townscape here, but tell different chapters of the city’s story.

The Brenninger Trail brings art into the urban landscape: this town walk leads through Thannhausen and follows the works of sculptor Georg Brenninger. Twelve stations give the route its clear structure. The history of the listed Tuchmacherhaus is also closely linked to cultural life. In 1987, the town made it available to the local history association for a local history museum; the association established a town museum there with exhibits collected over many years. The former courthouse at Dr.-Georg-und-Lu-Zimmermann-Platz dates from 1673 and has a Baroque gable designed by Kaspar Radmiller. The square is also home to the Bierbrunnen, designed by Thannhausen architect and city councillor Monika WiesmĂĽller-Schwab. It is the only drinking-water fountain in the town of Mindel.

Town Walks, Theatre and Water Sports

For a more active stay, Turncable offers wakeboarding and water skiing. Check the current opening days before making specific plans. Turncable also has a Flexibus stop, Thannhausen No. 1 “Wakeboard”; check current travel and service information in advance. Burgstalltheater Burg e.V. follows a different schedule: every few years, it stages a new production at its open-air theatre in Burg. If you would like to plan your trip around a performance, check the announced dates.

GĂĽnzburg as the Wider Regional Destination

The wider Günzburg destination offers additional, distinct attractions. LEGOLAND® Deutschland in Günzburg has eleven themed areas and 68 attractions; the theme park and its adjoining holiday village offer experiences for children aged 2 to 12. The hiking trails also offer different experiences: the DonAuwald Trail is the first premium hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia and runs for around 60 kilometres between Günzburg and Schwenningen. The DonauHänge, by contrast, is an 18.5-kilometre circular trail between Günzburg and Offingen through the hillside forest. Their length and route layout help distinguish these regional options from one another without confusing them with Thannhausen’s local attractions.

Choose Accommodation Based on Your Travel Interests

When looking for accommodation, first consider whether Thannhausen itself—with its buildings, art trail and Turncable—is your main focus, or whether you would also like to explore other attractions in the wider Günzburg destination. Choose a location to match your preferred mix of culture, water sports and regional day trips. This way, you can start planning with the experiences that interest you, rather than with a general idea of which accommodation might be suitable.
