Sand a.Main offers several ways to shape your trip: a large quarry lake, paths by the water, basket-making and wine. You can tailor your stay to your interests, with activities at the lake, a tour, or insights into local crafts and history.

Water, paths and views

The 40-hectare quarry lake in Sand am Main has play and sunbathing lawns, as well as opportunities for swimming, camping, stand-up paddling, boating and fishing. If you are planning specific activities at the lake, check the current conditions in advance. This helps you plan around the facilities that matter for your visit.

By the water, the S 1 “Around the Old Main” hiking trail combines exercise with a nature theme: it is about 4 km long and follows almost exactly the same route as the Sportanglerverein am Obermain fishing club’s aquatic ecology trail. The trail introduces visitors to the wildlife and plant life in and around the water. Other hiking options in Sand include the Mainaue Life Nature Experience Trail and the Franconian Way of St. Mary. This gives you a choice of trails with different names and themes.

For a different perspective, the Sand a. Main panoramic swing offers views of Sand and the Main Valley from Teilberg. If you would rather include a cycling route in your plans, consider the Main-Steigerwald Cycle Path. It leads from Sand a.Main out of the Main Valley and into the Steigerwald. Lake activities, an educational trail, a viewpoint and a cycling route each offer a different focus rather than the same kind of outing.

Crafts, wine and local history

At several basketware businesses in Sand am Main, you can see the techniques and history of basket-making. This complements the nature and walking options with an insight into a local craft. The quarrying of reed sandstone is also part of the town’s history: from the mid-18th century onward, the stone was increasingly quarried on Hermannsberg near Sand.

Wine is represented by the Vinothek at Weingut A & E Rippstein. Wines from the winery have been available there since autumn 2015; the Vinothek is on the ground floor of the Rippstein residence. From there, you can see the press house and a vineyard belonging to the winery. Confirm current public access before visiting. In the press house and in ripening rooms accessible at ground level, Mathias Rippstein makes wine from grapes grown in the Himmelsbühl vineyard sites. A stay in Sand therefore offers a look at wine as a product, its production and the named vineyard sites as distinct aspects.
