The Haßberge Nature Park is a gently rolling low mountain region with extensive mixed forests, fields and meadows, historic vineyards and a varied landscape. Those planning a trip to Haßberge can choose from hikes, historic sites, a museum and regional traditions to shape their stay.

Choose hikes by duration and distance

The experience trails in Haßberge Nature Park are half-day or full-day tours that follow circular routes back to their starting points. On the “Castles & Palaces Quality Hiking Trail,” you can explore the natural landscapes of the German Castle Corner on foot. The Castles & Palaces Hiking Trail is a 190-kilometre long-distance route through the German Castle Corner.

The Celtic Experience Trail covers 254 scenic kilometres from the Werra via the Gleichberge and Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund. The Amtsbotenweg runs across the Haßberge ridge, from Altenstein to Königsberg. This means you can choose from circular routes lasting half a day or a full day, as well as routes covering considerably longer distances. Haßberge Nature Park also has 23 e-bike themed routes; the number may change as routes are added or revised.

Views and history

Bettenburg is considered a landmark of Haßberge. The Schwedenschanze is a ring fort dating from the Hallstatt period. Its observation tower crowns a 487-metre-high summit on the Haßberge ridge. From there, the view stretches across mixed forest to the Grabfeld, as well as to the distant heights of the Rhön in the northwest and Thuringia to the north.

Eltmann hillfort is the ruin of a spur castle and a viewpoint at the site of its former keep. The Burgeninformationszentrum Altenstein offers a different kind of discovery: it is the heart of the German Castle Corner and points visitors to castles, castle ruins and palaces in Haßberge. Its facilities include an armoury with medieval knight’s armour and weapons, as well as a fictional excavation site with an adjoining research laboratory.

The railway museum at Hofheim station explores the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. You must register to visit the museum’s interior; visits are by appointment at 0 95 23 / 13 05. Arrange your appointment before you arrive.

Discover regional traditions

Fatschenbrunn is known for making “Hutzeln”: following an old tradition, pears are dried there to make delicious dried fruit. A hike through the Abt-Degen wine valley can also be paired with Franconian wine at the many hedgerow taverns and wine taverns. If you want to plan a stop at one of them, check the opening dates of the individual taverns in advance.

Your preferred way to spend each day can help determine your choice of accommodation: circular routes lasting half a day or a full day, longer distances, viewpoints and cultural attractions offer different options. If you have several interests in mind, decide on them before you start searching. This will help you choose accommodation based on the experiences that matter most during your stay.
