Maroldsweisach lies along the Castles Road and combines this travel connection with a village scene shaped by its castle, parish church and manor farm. In the Haßberge holiday region, the Castles Road leads from Bamberg through Rentweinsdorf, Ebern, Pfarrweisach and Maroldsweisach, continuing as far as Seßlach in the Coburg region. This succession of places gives your journey a historical setting—and Maroldsweisach a specific place within it.

Castle and paths in Maroldsweisach

Maroldsweisach Castle, together with the parish church and manor farm, shapes the village scene. The castle can be viewed from the outside at any time; check whether there are any local restrictions before your visit. The Stone Adventure Trail on the Zeilberg is also of interest when planning a trip with a pushchair: it is accessible with a pushchair. This offers both a path in the surrounding area and a view of a prominent building in the village, catering to different interests in excursions.

Another architectural highlight is Ditterswind Castle. The large castle complex largely appears to be a work of historicism. The old building was raised by an additional storey and extended to the west with an annex featuring narrow, crenellated corner turrets. On the street side, a projecting round tower with an onion dome separates the old and new buildings. The coat of arms of the Stein von Altenstein family on the old building indicates that construction was completed in 1743. The building’s description can thus be read in its specific details: in its different sections as well as in the tower’s distinctive roof shape.

Haßberge: Landscape and tours

Beyond the village, the wider Haßberge destination offers its own setting for excursions. Haßberge Nature Park is a gently rolling low mountain region of expansive mixed forests, fields and meadows, historic vineyards and varied landscapes. For visitors choosing tours by format, the Haßberge destination offers different options: the Castles and Palaces Hiking Trail is a 190-kilometre long-distance trail through the German Castles Corner. By contrast, the adventure tours in Haßberge Nature Park are half-day or full-day tours that follow circular routes back to their starting points. Another long-distance route is the 254-kilometre Celtic Adventure Trail, which runs from the Werra via the Gleichberge hills and the Haßberge through the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund.

Individual destinations also offer different highlights. Bettenburg is considered a landmark of the Haßberge. At the Schwedenschanze, history meets a scenic view: the ring fort dates back to the Hallstatt period. The observation tower crowns a 487-metre-high hilltop on the Haßberg ridge; from there, the view stretches over mixed forest to the Grabfeld, to the distant heights of the Rhön in the northwest and to Thuringia in the north. This makes it possible to combine a hike in the region with an archaeological site and sweeping views of the landscape.

Culture and regional discoveries

In the wider Haßberge destination, the “Hutzeldorf” European Cultural Trail follows a circular route of around six kilometres through Fatschenbrunn. Information boards and leaflets cover the village and its cultural landscape. Fatschenbrunn is also known for “Hutzeln”: pears dried as dried fruit according to an old tradition. This combination of village history, landscape and regional food offers a different way to explore the area than the longer hiking trails.

Another cultural stop is the railway museum at Hofheim station. It presents the history and technology of the Haßfurt–Hofheim local railway. Registration is required for the interior; visits are by appointment on 0 95 23 / 13 05. Arrange your visit before setting off. The Altenstein Castle Information Centre covers topics including an armoury with medieval knight’s armour and weapons, as well as a fictitious excavation site with an adjoining research laboratory. The centre is the heart of the German Castles Corner and points visitors to castles, castle ruins and palaces in the Haßberge.
