Near Neustadt a.Main, the most heavily forested eastern part of Spessart Nature Park reaches close to the Main River. Forest and river therefore shape the setting of the town. The area also has a long monastic history: Neustadt Benedictine Abbey was founded around 770. Hiking trails and significant church architecture give you different ways to include nature and history in your trip.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The M hiking trail runs directly through Neustadt a.Main and, coming from Lohr, passes the historic Neustadt Abbey. The town and the monastery are therefore part of the described route of this long-distance hiking trail. If you plan to hike the M trail, check current trail conditions before setting out.

The approximately 11.5 km Kloster Neustadt Cultural Trail, by contrast, is a circular route. It brings to life the history of Neustadt Abbey, Michaelsberg, Margarethenhof and Forsthaus Aurora. Its named stops give the trail a historical focus; its circular route and approximate length help you distinguish it from a long-distance hiking trail. You should also check current trail conditions before setting out.

In the wider region, there is an approximately 13 km cultural trail between Neustadt, Erlach and the former monastery estates. It covers the settlement and monastic history of the Waldsassengau and partly follows the historic Gertraudenpfad. This trail therefore connects a broader geographical and historical context than the Kloster Neustadt Cultural Trail. The two cultural trails have different focuses: one explores Neustadt Abbey and the places mentioned, while the other focuses on the history of the Waldsassengau and the historic path.

The monastery and Romanesque church architecture

The founding of the Benedictine monastery around 770 places Neustadt’s monastic history in an early period. On the cultural trail, this history is presented alongside Michaelsberg, Margarethenhof and Forsthaus Aurora as part of the themes brought to life along the circular route. If you are interested in cultural history, you can connect these stops with the route while keeping the town’s natural character in view.

Another striking testament is the parish church of St. Michael and Gertrude in Neustadt a.Main. It is a cruciform, three-aisled basilica with eastern towers. Despite being renovated in the 19th century, it retains original building fabric and is one of the most significant Romanesque churches in the wider area. With its Romanesque architecture, the church also represents the town’s architectural history and can be considered alongside its monastic history.

Neustadt a.Main and the wider Main-Spessart destination

The wider Main-Spessart destination brings together vineyards, water and forest to create a holiday region. Its hiking trails also extend beyond individual local circular routes: the Main Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometres long; just under 100 kilometres of it run through the district of Main-Spessart, connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. This regional scale differs from the approximately 11.5 km Kloster Neustadt Cultural Trail.

If you are planning additional hikes in the wider Main-Spessart destination, choose your search location based on the stages you have in mind. This keeps your selection aligned with your travel plans rather than treating local and regional trails as equivalent.
