Zellingen and Retzbach lie on opposite banks of the Main. This location gives the area a clear geographical reference point, alongside natural areas, hiking options and architectural history with different points of focus. When planning your trip, you can choose whether to focus on trails and landscapes, churches and historic sites, or carefully designed natural areas.

The Main landscape and natural attractions

On the route from the Main valley towards Duttenbrunn, green hills and beech and oak forests shape the landscape. Water and designed natural areas are also local highlights: the G´springsbach stream has been restored to a more natural state, and the Riedbach spring has been redesigned. Both invite you to spend time in natural surroundings. Rare bird species have visited and settled in the redesigned areas around Im G´spring. The Im G´spring water education trail is connected to the Main Cycle Route and can be visited by cyclists and day visitors. This brings the landscape, water and birdlife into view as distinct aspects of nature.

Hiking trails and different points of focus

The hiking trail network around the Markt Zellingen municipality was expanded in 2021 with five additional circular routes. The topics covered by the information boards range from sights and history to wine-growing and plant and animal life. The Retzbach–Karlstadt section of the Main Hiking Trail offers a different perspective: it runs through vineyards and forests above the Main valley and includes bird and plant education trails. While the circular routes cover their topics through information boards, this section combines scenery with knowledge about nature. The Im G´spring water education trail, in turn, is linked to the Main Cycle Route and also appeals to day visitors. When planning your trip, you can therefore distinguish between circular routes, a named hiking section and a cycling-related nature trail, without assuming they all have the same focus.

Churches and history

The architectural history can be seen in specific places. St. George’s Church in Zellingen was created in 1786–1787 by converting a two-storey wing of a castle. In Duttenbrunn, St. Margaret’s Church is considered the oldest building in the municipality. The pilgrimage church of Maria im grünen Tal in Retzbach is associated with a long religious tradition: the pilgrimage there has been documented since 1229. These churches represent different historical themes—a structural conversion, a building considered particularly old, and a pilgrimage with a long history.

Garden and wine-growing

The Retzbach health garden offers a bocce court, outdoor exercise equipment, a Kneipp pool, a Bible and medicinal herb garden, a grass maze and a meditation pavilion. Individual facilities may occasionally be unavailable. The garden thus brings together opportunities for exercise and quiet activities in one place. The municipality’s connection to wine-growing also includes the Retzbacher Benediktusberg vineyard.
