Partenstein is a state-recognized resort in the heart of Spessart Nature Park. Densely forested hills, the valleys of the Aubach and Lohrbach streams, and traces of mining and castle history shape the town. There are also opportunities to stay active at the Torweg recreation area. In Partenstein, landscape, history and active recreation come together.

Mixed forests, hills and two valleys

The landscape is shaped by hills that rise to 500 meters and are densely covered with mixed forest. The valleys of the Aubach and Lohrbach streams complete the picture.

Castle ruins and traces of former mining

Partenstein Castle ruins have been partially uncovered and restored. Another historical theme can be found along the “Marienschacht – Erichstollen” circular hiking trail: it leads to the former “Marienschacht” mining site and passes a replica of the old entrance to the “Erichstollen” adit.

Tour suggestion 1 also leads to a story explicitly handed down as a legend: the route passes the “Kunzenschuh.” According to the legend, after a daring leap from his horse, Knight Kunz left a shoe print in the rock as a band of robbers pursued him. The tale offers a different way to explore the local landscape than the history of the castle and mining: here, the focus is on a local legend, not a verified historical event.

Recreation at Torweg

At the Torweg recreation area, you can play boules, climb, try archery, play beach volleyball and go running. There are also lawns where you can play football and handball. The range of activities offers different ways to spend time outdoors; football and handball are specifically available on the lawns. If you are traveling together, this variety can help you coordinate everyone’s interests for the day and decide which activities matter most to your plans.

Main-Spessart as a wider destination

The wider Main-Spessart destination offers additional landscapes and cultural themes. Vineyards, water and forests come together there to form a holiday region. The Main Hiking Trail is around 500 kilometers long in total; nearly 100 kilometers run through the Main-Spessart district, connecting Karlstadt, GemĂĽnden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. This gives a sense of the scale of a regional long-distance hiking route, distinct from the local themes of Partenstein.

The cultural destinations each have their own character, too. In Karlstadt, the old town, founded around 1200, preserves buildings and structures that have endured for more than seven centuries. In Aschfeld, a district of Eußenheim, the historic refuge and fortified castle dates back to the 15th century; parts of the defensive complex are now used as museum rooms. The “The Good Old Days Up Close” collection presents historic defensive weapons as well as rural life and work. At the Homburg Paper Mill Museum, a hand papermaking workshop still produces fine handmade paper to this day, now in its fifth generation. These examples show how nature, local history and craftsmanship coexist in the wider Main-Spessart destination.
