There are several ways to get to know Thüngen: on a guided tour of the old town, in the Japanese Garden, which is open seasonally, or along the Werntal Cycle Route, which runs directly through the town. Each offers a different perspective.

Local history along an agreed route

A German-language guided tour of the old town is available for groups by arrangement. These include families, clubs, companies and class reunions, among others. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and starts at the Ludwigslinde on Planplatz. From there, the route goes across Planplatz, to St. George’s Church and through the Bangerts. Along the way, the tour covers historic sites and former Jewish institutions. This connects specific places in town with different aspects of its history.

If this type of town walk fits your travel plans, arrange a date in advance with the local contact. The approximate duration and fixed meeting point provide clear guidance for the group’s time together.

Japanese Garden and castle complex

From May to September, Ruth and Horst Benkert open their Japanese Garden, which covers about 500 square metres. Its features include a pond and stream with a waterfall, seating, Far Eastern decorations, bamboo, ornamental maples, and rock and stone elements. Water, plants and stone all come together in the garden. Booking in advance is requested, so please confirm the arrangements for your visit beforehand.

The castle complex in Thüngen, located in the Bangerts park, comprises the Burgschloss, Spitalschloss and Alter Stock. These three named sections give an overview of the complex; the property is privately inhabited. The Bangerts is also a stop on the old-town tour, which covers historic sites and former Jewish institutions there.

A group experience in the castle cellar

At Schlossgut Thüngen, groups of 20 or more can book a whisky and beer tasting with a three-course meal in the castle cellar. A date must be requested when planning. If this experience might suit your group, confirm the date directly with the provider.

Hiking and culture in the wider Main-Spessart destination

The wider Main-Spessart destination offers everything from longer hiking routes to short walks. The Main hiking trail is around 500 kilometres long; nearly 100 kilometres of it run through the district of Main-Spessart, connecting Karlstadt, Gemünden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. The Spessart Trails are also part of the regional hiking offer and carry the “Wanderbares Deutschland” quality seal. In the Spessart Nature Park, options range from short walks to multi-day hikes. This information helps put a short walk around town and a longer hiking itinerary into perspective as different ways to plan a trip.

Main-Spessart’s cultural offer includes places with distinct focuses. Surrounded by walls, towers and gates, Karlstadt’s old town was founded around 1200; its buildings and urban structures have been preserved for more than seven centuries. In Aschfeld, a district of Eußenheim, there is a historic fortified church dating from the 15th century. Parts of the fortifications are now used as museum rooms, displaying old defensive weapons as well as rural life and work in the collection “The Good Old Days to Touch.”

The Museum Papiermühle Homburg offers another perspective. It preserves production facilities from the 19th and 20th centuries, living quarters of the papermaking family and a demonstration workshop. At the same time, a hand papermaking workshop there continues to produce fine mould-made paper in its fifth generation. Within the wider destination, historic town structures, a fortified church used as a museum and living craft traditions thus offer distinct cultural themes.
