Discover Amorbach
Accommodation in Amorbach
Amorbach offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: the Smart Trail Odenwald, the Princely Court Library and historic sites in the surrounding area. Each of these places has its own appeal. You can decide whether a trail, cultural history or a combination of both should be the focus of your stay.
Smart Trail Odenwald with a children’s booklet
The Smart Trail Odenwald is free of charge and open 24 hours a day, all year round. A free companion booklet with tips and puzzles for children is available from the Bayerischer Odenwald Information Centre in Amorbach. For families planning to walk the trail with children, the booklet offers a different way to experience it: the puzzles and clues give children practical ideas for exploring the Smart Trail.
Court library and monastery history
The Princely Court Library in Amorbach is one of the most important and beautiful libraries of the 18th century. Its collection comprises 30,000 volumes; the size of the collection may change over time.
Nearby Gotthard is home to a three-aisled basilica with pillars. “Three-aisled” describes a church interior with three naves. A Benedictine convent was founded there in place of a castle. The church’s two rows of arcades and decorated impost friezes date from this convent—visible architectural traces of its history.
Gotthard and Amorsbrunn in the surrounding area
Gotthard, formerly called Frankenberg, lies around one kilometre north of Amorbach on a hilltop that rises about 100 metres above its surroundings. From the viewing platform of the Gotthard ruins, the Siebentälerblick viewpoint looks across the Amorbach valley basin as far as the Spessart. Groups can book guided tours at and inside the Gotthard ruins through the Bayerischer Odenwald Information Centre.
The Amorsbrunn Chapel is about two kilometres from the old town. A guided tour of the chapel includes a look at the Jesse Altar, created around 1500. It depicts the family tree of Jesus, from the House of King David, as a tree of life.
Miltenberg as an additional cultural backdrop
In the wider destination of Miltenberg, the district’s Culture Weeks take place every year from mid-September; the exact dates vary. The programme is for all ages. It includes concerts of classical and contemporary music, as well as events featuring jazz and electronic music; individual offerings change from year to year. The Stadt Museum presents the history of Miltenberg and the region in three historic half-timbered houses on Miltenberg’s market square, the Schnatterloch.
Travel season and accommodation focus
There is a useful distinction when it comes to timing your trip: the Smart Trail is open 24 hours a day, all year round, while the Culture Weeks in the wider destination of Miltenberg take place every year from mid-September, with exact dates varying. This comparison can help you decide on your preferred mix of themes and travel dates before looking for accommodation.
