Vineyards, expansive views over the Upper Aisch Valley and distinctive cultural landmarks give Ipsheim its own character. Between the pavilion, castle and features of the townscape, there are different highlights to discover: landscape, history and design meet here in many different ways.

Vineyards, valley views and Hoheneck Castle

The terroir f pavilion in Ipsheim’s vineyards offers views over the Upper Aisch Valley. The view across the landscape provides a peaceful contrast to the town’s striking buildings. Hoheneck Castle is one of the excursion destinations in the district of Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim thanks to its distinctive appearance. For planning purposes, however, it is important to note that the castle generally cannot be visited inside because seminars are held there. Since 1984, it has served as a youth education centre run by the Nuremberg City Youth Council. Check the municipality’s latest information about dates and access arrangements in advance.

Below the castle, among the vines, lies the chapel in the vineyard. Access arrangements differ: because of its secluded location, it is usually locked and opens for church occasions and vineyard tours. If you would like to see inside the chapel, plan your visit around these occasions and follow local guidance. This distinction can help when planning to visit both the castle and the chapel: the castle is generally subject to restrictions due to seminar operations, while the chapel opens on specific occasions.

Design and symbols in the townscape

At the Kastenbau, the monumental building sits quietly in a paved area, like a ship on the water. The flowing water symbolises time. The design gives the place its own visual language: water is not just part of the scene here, but also represents the passage of time.

Another striking feature is the almost life-size bronze figure of Bacchus on Markgrafenplatz. It was installed on the newly redesigned square on 11 August 2000. Surrounded by five young sycamore maples, the figure stands on an oval wine barrel made of local shell limestone. The combination of bronze, stone and trees clearly distinguishes this artwork from the water symbolism at the Kastenbau. Together, the two motifs show the different ways design is expressed in Ipsheim’s townscape.

Landscape and experiences in the wider destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim

Landscape and outdoor activities are also at the heart of the wider destination of Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim. The district is nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks and is particularly easy to explore on foot or by bike. The district-wide cycle network includes themed routes for a range of abilities, from leisurely rides to more challenging cycling. Another option is the “vom Main zur Zenn” long-distance cycle route, almost 100 kilometres long: it runs through the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth.

Museums, regional cuisine and seasonal events

For culture enthusiasts, the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Bad Windsheim offers a tour through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. One notable architectural detail is the Bauhofstadel: built between 1441 and 1444, its late-medieval roof structure spans an interior of about 360 square metres without supports. In Neustadt an der Aisch, the Aischgrund Carp Museum explores the more than 1,250-year tradition of carp farming. The exhibition comprises ten rooms.

Culinary traditions also follow their own annual calendar in the wider destination. Aischgrund mirror carp is one of Neustadt an der Aisch’s local specialities and is served from September to April, for example, fried until crisp or cooked in a seasoned broth. The Aischgrund Carp Weeks take place every year from 1 September to 1 November at selected restaurants in the district. If you plan your visit around these seasonal offerings, check which restaurants are taking part and consult the latest programme.
