Ippesheim: Wine, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Ippesheim
Ippesheim combines wine knowledge with hiking trails and cultural and historical discoveries. A grape variety trail on the Bullenheimer Berg, routes through fields and vineyards, and local wine-tasting opportunities give your stay a range of different focuses.
Grape Variety Trail and Hiking Routes
The Bullenheimer Berg is home to Middle Franconia’s only grape variety trail. The grape varieties grown there are explained in detail. Bullenheim is part of the Markt Ippesheim municipality. So if you are interested in wine, you can do more here than simply admire the vineyards: you can also learn more about the grape varieties grown there.
The hiking trails start in Ippesheim at Lichtenstein Castle. Depending on your stamina, they take around one to three hours and lead through fields and vineyards, along the Iff stream from mill to mill, or up to the Frankenberg. The different destinations offer varied impressions of the surrounding area; the stated time range can help you plan the length of a day’s hike. If you are traveling with your family, you can compare the duration with your own stamina and the rest of your day’s plans.
Sightseeing and Local Wine
A reconstruction of “Ippsi’s” burial, along with other finds, can be seen at Ippesheim Castle. You must contact the municipal office in advance to arrange a visit. Be sure to make this request if you would like to include the visit in your itinerary.
You can sample locally produced wines at local wineries and seasonal wine taverns (Heckenwirtschaften). Opening times vary by establishment and season, so arrange your visit directly with the winery in question. This lets you include wine-related activities in your travel plans without assuming that all venues are open during the same period.
When choosing accommodation, the kind of stay you have in mind may be the deciding factor: Would you mainly like to hike, explore wine, or plan a visit focused on local history and culture? Consider which of these interests you want to shape your days, and tailor your search accordingly.
In the wider Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim destination
The wider Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim destination also offers its own attractions for nature, cycling and culture enthusiasts. The Neustadt a.d.Aisch-Bad Windsheim district is nestled between the Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe nature parks and is especially well suited to exploring on foot or by bike. One of the longer cycling routes is the nearly 100-kilometer “vom Main zur Zenn” (“From the Main to the Zenn”) route: it crosses the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. The district-wide cycling network also offers themed circuits for different levels, from leisurely rides to more challenging cycling.
In Bad Windsheim, a walk through the Franconian Open Air Museum takes you through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. One architectural feature is the Bauhofstadel, built between 1441 and 1444: its late medieval roof structure spans an interior of around 360 square meters without supporting columns. In Neustadt an der Aisch, the Aischgründer Carp Museum explores the more than 1,250-year-old tradition of carp farming across ten rooms.
Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim also offers seasonal options for food lovers. The Aischgründer mirror carp is one of Neustadt an der Aisch’s local specialties and is served from September to April, including crispy fried or poached in broth. The Aischgründer Carp Weeks take place each year at selected restaurants across the district from September 1 to November 1; the Game Weeks offer game dishes prepared in a variety of ways each November. Before your trip, check which restaurants are participating or consult the relevant program.
