Beutelsbach invites you to explore its landscape and history together. The Kleeberg circular trail follows field paths uphill to a viewpoint overlooking the Bavarian Forest; the mountain is also home to a memorial and prehistoric burial mounds. Information and interactive stations cover historical and nature-related topics. The wider Passau destination offers additional, distinct cultural and nature experiences.

Kleeberg circular trail: field paths and views

The circular trail starts at the village square and follows field paths uphill to Kleeberg. From there, you can enjoy views across the Bavarian Forest. The route and landscape are clear: the climb leads up the mountain, where the view opens out over the forest. Kleeberg is also home to historical sites, giving the trail a second, cultural and historical dimension.

Memorial and burial mounds on Kleeberg

One of the three memorials to the 1706 Battle of Aidenbach is located on Kleeberg. It commemorates the more than 2,000 fallen members of the peasant army, who fought for their rights and freedoms. The memorial thus marks a specific event and commemorates those who fell, all in the same place.

The burial mounds reveal a much earlier past: about 3,800 years ago, the first people of Beutelsbach built burial mounds on Kleeberg. They placed grave goods with the deceased for a presumed afterlife. The approximate date highlights the vast span of time between these burials and the commemoration of the peasant battle.

History and nature along the way

The information and interactive stations along the circular trail cover Beutelsbach’s local history as well as prehistory and the Bronze Age. Other topics include the memorial to the peasant battle, the Kleeberg and Reitholz burial mound fields, and the Schratzelgänge tunnels of Unterholzen. The station topics therefore range from the town’s history to named places and historical traditions.

You can also discover nature along the hiking trails: puzzle, hands-on and information stations introduce local habitats and the area’s diversity of animal and plant life. The many herbs of Kleeberg are also featured. Alongside the historical topics, the focus is on observing and engaging with nature.

More highlights in the wider Passau destination

In the wider Passau destination, the Bavarian Forest Museum Village in Tittling offers a different way to explore history. On 20 hectares, you can visit more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890. The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments. Germany’s oldest elementary school, dating from 1666, is also part of the site. While Beutelsbach brings its themes together on a mountain and at its stations, the museum village showcases rural architecture and everyday life across many different buildings.

Another nature highlight in the wider Passau destination is the Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre. It is located in the narrow Bavarian-Austrian Danube valley below Untergriesbach. The region also recommends the Granite Experience Hiking Trail around Hauzenberg and the Smuggler’s Trail in the Danube Pearls for hiking. These examples offer different regional highlights from the Kleeberg circular trail, without suggesting that they are the same as the Beutelsbach stations.
