Discover Ruderting: Trails, Crosses and Pond
Accommodation in Ruderting
Ruderting can be explored through its trails, traces of local culture and a green space by the landscaped pond. The attractions offer different highlights: chapels are linked by cycling and hiking routes, the GeHschichtenweg follows the banks of the Ilz, and the village has wayside crosses, an art trail and a pond with a landscaped area.
Chapel loops and trails along the Ilz
The four KapellenRadWanderRunden (Chapel Cycling and Hiking Loops) take locals and visitors from chapel to chapel through the landscapes of the municipalities of Ruderting and Tiefenbach. You can cycle each loop individually, link them together or walk them. This gives you a choice between a single loop, several linked loops and a walking tour—without having to commit to just one way of getting around.
The Rudertinger GeHschichtenweg offers a different focus: it runs along the banks of the Ilz, parallel to the southernmost stage of the Goldsteig Trail to Passau. For planning purposes, the two trail themes are easy to distinguish: the chapels and landscapes of the municipalities of Ruderting and Tiefenbach on the one hand, and the banks of the Ilz and the parallel section of the Goldsteig on the other. Passau is the explicitly named destination for this stage.
Wayside crosses, art trail and landscaped pond
Ruderting has around 20 wayside and field crosses. Most were restored during the land consolidation of the early 1990s. One prominent landmark is Ruderting’s largest and best-known cross, which has stood in the village centre since 1935. The approximate number of crosses and the restoration of most of them give this cultural heritage a different scale from the distinguished cross in the village centre.
The Ruderting Art Trail is suitable for pushchairs. By the landscaped pond, a green space with numerous trees, bushes and shrubs invites you to stroll and linger. A natural Kneipp pool and an adventure playground for children are nearby. Alongside the themed loops, you can therefore choose a trail specifically noted as pushchair-accessible or a place for a more relaxed stay in green surroundings.
Passau as a broader travel destination
The wider Passau destination, Passauer Land, offers further themes for planning your trip. Rivers, forests and thermal spas shape the region; well-known thermal springs are located in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. The Danube Cycle Path runs through Passauer Land and received a 4-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Federation. If this rating matters for your plans, check its current status.
Culture in Passauer Land can also be considered as a destination in its own right. In Tittling, the Bavarian Forest Museum Village is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. Visitors can explore more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest, dating from 1580 to 1890, across 20 hectares. The museum village includes farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments, as well as Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666. This offers a very different cultural focus from the wayside crosses and routes in Ruderting.
Another seasonal cultural option is the Ortenburg Castle Culture programme, an event series organised by the Friends of Ortenburg Castle. From April to December, it features musical events, cabaret performances, spooky nights at the castle, talks and tours. Check event dates when planning your trip. If you would rather compare hiking trails, Passauer Land offers the Granite Adventure Hiking Trail around Hauzenberg and the Smuggler’s Trail in the Danube Pearls. These regional attractions provide an additional framework for choosing your destinations; they are not features of Ruderting.
