Brennberg: Castle Ruins, Church and Castle Trail
Accommodation in Brennberg
Brennberg lies at an elevation of about 650 m on a hill in the hilly landscape of the Vorderer Bayerischer Wald. A prominent destination is Brennberg Castle Ruins, whose history dates back to the 11th century. In good weather, the panoramic view from there reaches as far as the Alps in places. The view therefore also depends on weather conditions.
The character of the village is shaped by several distinct impressions: its elevated setting, the historic castle complex and the parish church.
Castle Ruins and Parish Church: History on Site
The castle’s history dates back to the 11th century. The parish church also tells of Brennberg’s past: in 1686, the church was badly damaged in a devastating fire that razed almost all of Brennberg. On June 9, 1860, Bishop Ignatius of Regensburg consecrated the parish church.
The two sites offer different historical perspectives: the ruins point to a castle history stretching far back in time, while the consecration of the parish church marks a specific date in the 19th century. The parish church is open during the day; check locally for current access information before your visit. Brennberg Castle Ruins can be visited at any time. The Castle Trail and Other Routes
The Brennberg Castle Trail can be started in Brennberg, among other places. Its digitally mapped main route runs between Brennberg, Frauenzell, Wiesent and Wörth. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
An official feeder trail leads from Brennberg to the Goldsteig. In the wider region, a connecting trail between the Goldsteig and the Danube Panorama Trail also passes via the Frauenzell pilgrimage church. These route connections offer different starting points for planning your hike: a starting point in Brennberg, a feeder trail to the Goldsteig and a connection that passes through Frauenzell.
Regensburg: More to Discover in the Wider Destination
In the wider destination of Regensburg, the Walhalla in Donaustauf offers a distinctive architectural and historical perspective. Since 1842, this Neoclassical memorial and hall of fame on the Danube has honored prominent Germans and figures associated with German history with marble busts and commemorative plaques. Its Doric exterior features 52 columns.
A different focus is offered by the nine-hectare Nepal-Himalaya Park in Wiesent. It combines Asian culture and nature with a Nepalese temple, a richly varied perennial garden and numerous Asian artworks. The grounds also include a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species. The wider destination therefore offers a range of interests: memorial architecture and history on the one hand, and gardens and plant diversity on the other.
For another perspective, the signposted Orchard Experience Trail runs for about 34 kilometers from Hemau via Beratzhausen to Kallmünz. Twelve large information panels are located along the cycling route. This trail therefore offers a different kind of regional connection from Brennberg’s history and elevated landscape. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether Brennberg’s castle, church and Castle Trail are your main focus, or whether you would like to include other places in the wider destination of Regensburg in your plans.
