Views and trails through Bad Königshofen
If you would like to explore the town on foot, the Baumlehr-Allee offers a four-kilometre circular trail through Bad Königshofen. Along the route are 110 tree species. It includes the Mediterranean Garden, also known as the Monastery Garden, the Celtic Grove (Brügel) and the Sorbus-Rosenwald by the Franconian Saale. The route connects several named garden and tree areas within the town.
The “Kultur auf Schritt und Tritt” cultural hiking trail runs through Bad Königshofen, Merkershausen and Annabild and back again; it is about twelve kilometres long. For a longer cycling trip, a route follows the former railway line from Bad Königshofen via Bad Neustadt to Bischofsheim. It is around 54 kilometres long. This comparison shows the difference in scale: from a four-kilometre circular trail to an extended cycling trip. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The remains of Bad Königshofen’s fortification walls and town gates are also worth a visit. Alongside views of the surrounding landscape, you can take in the town’s historic character. Whether you plan a walk around town, a cultural hiking trail or a longer cycling trip depends on which focus you would like your stay to have.
Healing waters and a thermal bath experience
The pools at FrankenTherme Bad Königshofen are supplied by the two state-recognised healing springs, Regiusquelle and Urbaniquelle. The complex also includes a natural healing-water lake, which combines genuine healing water with biological purification. The Finnish-Franconian sauna village has seven themed saunas, with temperatures ranging from 55°C to 95°C.
The ADAC TopPlatz for motorhome travellers is right beside FrankenTherme.
Schranne and museums: history in one place
Schranne is the setting for several cultural experiences. The Archaeological Museum opened there in 1988 as a branch of the Munich State Collection of Archaeology. The building was originally a granary and was built in 1693. Following extensive renovations to the building and exhibition, the museum reopened on 14 May 2019. These dates tell the story both of the building’s long history and of the museum’s more recent renewal.
The Stone Age Workshop of the Bad Königshofen Museum Education Centre is also housed in Schranne. It is aimed in particular at school classes and groups, and offers insights into the lives and craft techniques of prehistoric people. The Museum for Border Crossers is located in the former salt house, a section of the Schranne complex. On two floors, it explores life at and with the border in the Grabfeld: the period before 1945, when close neighbourly ties and a shared dialect and economic area brought people together, and the years from 1945 to 1989, when crossing the border was often life-threatening. The buildings thus bring different historical topics together.
The wider travel destination of Rhön-Grabfeld
Rhön-Grabfeld also offers themes to shape your travel plans: the district lies within the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps; the Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone of the biosphere reserve. These regional landscapes complement the local impressions of Bad Königshofen, without being the same as the town’s attractions.
For those interested in culture, the fortified church in Ostheim vor der Rhön is another point of interest in the wider travel destination of Rhön-Grabfeld. It was designated a monument of national importance in 2003 and is Germany’s largest and particularly well-preserved fortified church. These regional themes can add to your choice of stay if you are interested not only in thermal baths, local history and trails, but also in landscapes and architectural heritage.
