Discover Rödelmaier through its paths and local history. The signposted Reflection Trail, the “Angels Along the Rödelmaier Trail” circular route and the parish church of St. Ägidius each offer something different. This gives you a mix of walking, music and architectural discoveries to help plan your trip.

Paths offering different experiences

The Reflection Trail runs through the entire municipality, with eleven stations, and is about 8 km long. It is easy to walk and suitable for wheelchair users and strollers. This provides practical guidance for anyone looking for a signposted route with several stations; the approximate length and stated accessibility features can help you decide how to include the trail in your plans.

Music adds another dimension to the “Angels Along the Rödelmaier Trail” circular route: at many stations, you can scan QR-code stars to listen to a different song at each one. The angel figures also have a local story behind them. In 2023, the church team and the Helping Hands group, with support from Dieter Wirsing, Elisabeth Schmitt, Doris Hornung, Nadine Hartmann and Carola Kroczek, made various figures and put them up in Rödelmaier. Both the audio features at the stations and the figures created by the community are among the distinctive details of this circular route.

Another option is the village loop: it leads to the “Fourteen Holy Helpers” wayside shrine and returns to Rödelmaier via Dürmingshöhe. While the Reflection Trail is described as having eleven stations and being about 8 km long, the village loop’s specific route takes in the wayside shrine, the path over Dürmingshöhe and the return to Rödelmaier. This lets you choose between a longer, signposted reflection trail and a loop with named local landmarks.

The church and historic local landmarks

The nave of the parish church of St. Ägidius is late Baroque and dates from 1762. A Lourdes grotto dating from around 1900 is located on the north side of the church. To its south stands a historicist sandstone statue of the Virgin Mary, dated 1899. The nave, grotto and statue offer different architectural and art-historical points of reference for the village’s history.

The former castle estate buildings also tell the story of the village’s architecture. They stand opposite the former castle of the Voite von Salzburg and comprise a western courtyard wing, a former farm building, a gateway, an eastern courtyard wing, a former barn and a garden wall. The former farm building is now used as the town hall. The combination of former estate buildings and their present-day use as the town hall makes this ensemble another specific destination for anyone wishing to explore Rödelmaier’s history as well as its trails.

Nature and culture in the wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination

Beyond Rödelmaier, the wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination offers further nature and culture experiences. Rhön-Grabfeld is located in the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps; the Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone within the biosphere reserve. This information provides context for nature destinations in Rhön-Grabfeld and is distinct from the Reflection Trail and Rödelmaier’s local landmarks.

The Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen is a cultural highlight. Using faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads, it presents 350 years of rural everyday life in Lower Franconia and the Rhön. The museum grounds cover around 12 hectares and contain around 30 historic buildings, including farmhouses, craft buildings and a village school. Hands-on activities focusing on crafts and traditions include demonstrations, practical courses and events. In this way, exploring rural history combines with different opportunities to discover and take part.

You can also plan specific outdoor activities in the wider destination. The Gangolfsberg nature trail is about 2.5 km long; sturdy footwear is required. For cycling, four NES Alliance cycle routes connect the villages in the alliance area. They meet at the information point at Schillerhain in Bad Neustadt an der Saale. So, alongside the trails in Rödelmaier, you can choose regional hiking and cycling options, each with its own route or equipment information.

If you would also like to include nature or museum destinations in the wider area, Rhön-Grabfeld offers a broader range of themes.
