Atting combines the fertile Gäuboden with a townscape shaped far and wide by the tall, pointed Neo-Gothic tower of the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary, which has been a prominent landmark since 1878. At the same time, the activity park encourages outdoor pursuits. In Atting, outdoor activities and architectural history come together—two different points of interest to consider when planning your stay.

Outdoor activities and a break along the Labertal cycle path

Atting’s activity park offers sports exercises and group training. Together with the Kneipp facility, it provides outdoor activities that can be enjoyed individually or as a group. If you like to stay active, you’ll find different ways to exercise here, without being limited to a single type of training.

The “‘s Bankerl” cyclist rest area is also located along the Labertal cycle path. Its facilities include a pavilion, benches and bicycle racks. You can plan to stop here for a break along the route. If you intend to use it as a specific, fixed rest stop, check the condition of the facilities in advance.

Church architecture spanning several periods

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary offers several architectural and historical points of interest: its choir is Late Gothic, while the nave dates from 1859. The tall, pointed Neo-Gothic tower has shaped Atting’s skyline since 1878. The different periods of construction give the church a layered character that is easy to appreciate even without prior knowledge of art history.

There is also a sandstone statue of the Virgin Mary at the church, dating from around 1620. The parish church was also associated with a former chapel for the souls of the dead in the cemetery, dated to around 1700. Several periods are represented here: from the Late Gothic choir to the 19th-century nave and the older furnishings and buildings. In Rinkam, which belongs to the municipality of Atting, the branch church of St John the Baptist adds another perspective on the area’s architectural history. It is a two-storey Romanesque fortified church dating from the 13th century.

Further highlights in the wider destination of Straubing-Bogen

Beyond Atting, the wider destination of Straubing-Bogen offers a range of other points of interest. The Gäubodenmuseum in Straubing displays a storage vessel from the Early Bronze Age found in Atting: the “Attinger Ware.” The find connects the town with a regional museum exhibit, without implying that there is a museum in Atting.

The Bogenberg offers a different cultural highlight. It is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites to remain active to this day. The Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place every year at Pentecost at the pilgrimage church. Those interested in religious traditions will find a clear contrast here to the outdoor activities in Atting.

The wider destination of Straubing-Bogen also offers other opportunities to observe nature. The accessible circular trail around Beckenweiher pond in Wiesenfelden is 2.3 kilometres long and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Five information points with benches and information boards cover the pond’s wildlife and plant life, its protected status and its history. There is also a 110-metre-long nature observation boardwalk. The Bayerwald Xperium offers a different kind of experience: visitors can explore natural phenomena and the natural sciences for themselves at more than 100 hands-on experiment stations.

You can choose where to stay based on the mix of outdoor activities, culture and nature you’re looking for on your trip.
