In Salching, activities and local history offer a range of things to discover: alongside the SV-Salching sports grounds is a public exercise trail, while the branch church of St. Peter and an archaeological find each offer their own cultural-history perspective. If you are looking for accommodation, these themes can provide an initial guide to the kind of stay you have in mind.

Activities and history in Salching

The exercise trail includes a balance trainer, a full-body trainer, a balance course, a back trainer, pull-up bars and a slackline. It is located next to the SV-Salching sports grounds, is designed for all age groups and is easy to access. The different elements offer a range of ways to get active, from balance exercises to equipment-based training. For travellers who would like to incorporate exercise into their time in Salching, it is a specific public place to do so.

The branch church of St. Peter at Brückenstraße 37 is a small Late Romanesque complex, expanded in the Baroque period and altered around 1900. Its tower dates from the 18th century, and its furnishings are another of the church’s distinctive features. The building thus illustrates several different phases: its Late Romanesque origins, Baroque expansion and later alteration around 1900. This makes the church a tangible introduction to Salching’s architectural history.

The archaeology room in Salching offers a different window onto the past. Its centrepiece is a display case, positioned centrally on a stand, containing part of the skeleton from a richly furnished Early Bronze Age burial. While the church tells the story of different building phases, the display case draws attention to a burial from the Early Bronze Age. Activities, architecture and archaeology thus offer different starting points for planning your trip.

More to explore in the wider Straubing-Bogen destination

Beyond Salching, the wider Straubing-Bogen destination offers its own cultural-history highlights. Bogenberg is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites still active today. The annual Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place at the pilgrimage church there at Pentecost. The Bogenberg District Museum explores the history of Bavaria’s lozenges: from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen and their use by the Wittelsbachs and in the Bavarian state coat of arms, to their role as a symbol of Bavaria. It also presents Bogenberg as Lower Bavaria’s Holy Mountain and as the site of one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimages. Individually tailored museum tours about Bogenberg can be booked for groups of ten or more and school classes by telephone or in writing in advance, including outside opening hours.

For hands-on exploration of scientific phenomena, the Bayerwald Xperium offers more than 100 interactive stations. If you would rather spend time outdoors, there are different paths and circular routes to choose from: the Kobelberg nature trail in Wiesenfelden is about 4.5 kilometres long, has nine stations, is suitable for pushchairs and is cleared in winter. The circular route around Beckenweiher is 2.3 kilometres long and accessible to people with disabilities; it is also suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Five information points with benches and information boards cover the local flora and fauna, conservation status and the history of the pond; a 110-metre-long nature observation boardwalk is also part of the route. These details show two distinct route profiles: a longer trail with stations and a shorter circular route specifically noted as suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

The wider Straubing-Bogen destination also has specific options for cycling trips. In Bogen, the “Culture Tour”, “Beer Garden Tour” and “Left and Right of the Danube” are described as day trips for families with children. The European VIA NOVA Pilgrim Route is on a different scale: marked as a hiking trail along its total length of around 300 kilometres, it passes through Bogen. This offers a choice between shorter, themed day trips and a longer marked hiking trail.
