Rattenberg is best discovered along its hiking trails: the Teufelsmühl circular trail starts in the village at an elevation of 600 metres, while the forest nature trail begins at the sports grounds. It leads through the wooded area of Liebenberg. There is also the “Rampsberger Rittergewölbe” castle museum on the village square. This lets you treat outdoor exercise and a museum visit as separate activities and plan your stay according to your interests.

Hiking around Rattenberg

Three planning details are available for the TeufelsmĂĽhl circular trail: it is 8.7 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 330 metres and takes around three hours. The approximate walking time helps with planning your day, while the length and elevation gain provide further guidance for the route. The starting point is in Rattenberg at an elevation of 600 metres.

There are various options beyond this circular trail, too: eleven well-signposted municipal hiking trails run through the municipality, as well as three long-distance hiking trails and three hiking routes to specific destinations. Rattenberg is also on the Goldsteig, a certified quality hiking trail. The different types of trail can help you decide whether to plan your days around individual hikes or longer routes.

Another option is the Danube–Regen cycle path, which passes through Rattenberg. Hiking and cycling offer different ways to spend your holiday days.

Castle museum by prior arrangement

The “Rampsberger Rittergewölbe” castle museum is housed in the old town hall at Dorfplatz 9. Access is via Kirchweg. The museum is open by prior arrangement. Please check this requirement again before your visit. Located on the village square and accessed via Kirchweg, the museum offers a clearly identified destination for anyone looking to complement their hiking time with a cultural activity.

More ideas in the wider Straubing-Bogen travel destination

If you are considering other destinations in addition to Rattenberg, the wider Straubing-Bogen travel destination offers other themes. At Bogenberg, the district museum explores the history of the Bavarian lozenges: from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen and their use by the Wittelsbach dynasty and in the Bavarian coat of arms, through to their status as a symbol of Bavaria. The museum also presents Bogenberg as Lower Bavaria’s Holy Mountain and as the site of one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimages. The Holzkirchen candle pilgrimage takes place annually at Pentecost at the pilgrimage church.

For an outing focused on nature, another point of reference is the Beckenweiher circular trail in Wiesenfelden. This accessible trail is 2.3 kilometres long and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Five information points with benches and information boards cover the local flora and fauna, the area’s protected status and the history of Beckenweiher. The trail also crosses a 110-metre-long nature observation boardwalk. This offers a specific short circular route focused on local nature, which can be compared with—but not confused with—the hiking trails in Rattenberg.

The wider Straubing-Bogen travel destination also offers named options for a day trip by bike: in Bogen, the “Culture Tour”, “Beer Garden Tour” and “Left and Right of the Danube” are offered as day trips for families with children. This allows you to distinguish Rattenberg’s connections to hiking and cycling trails from other routes in Bogen explicitly designated as family tours.
