Ingenried lies on the edge of the Sachsenrieder Forest and on the border between Upper Bavaria and the Allgäu. St. George’s Parish Church, the outdoor pool and the Geißtal Trail each offer something different: sacred art, swimming fun and hiking. When looking for a place to stay, your main travel interest can therefore be a good starting point: Would you like to explore the church, plan a day at the pool or spend time on the hiking trail?

Church art in Ingenried and the municipality

The foundation stone of St. George’s Parish Church in Ingenried was laid on 5 July 1745 by Marianus II Mayr, Abbot of Steingaden. The church is attributed to master builder Dominikus Zimmermann; because its outline recalls that of the Wieskirche, it is also known as the “Little Wieskirche.” Inside is a Late Gothic Madonna and Child, originally from nearby Dietlried. The dated laying of the foundation stone and the older Madonna offer different historical perspectives on the church.

Characteristic chapels can also be found in other parts of the municipality. In Huttenried, the village chapel of the Holy Cross is a single-nave plastered building with a three-sided chancel and a roof turret dating from 1863. The Catholic Chapel of the Holy Family in Krottenhill dates from 1894: this small plastered hall has a polygonal chancel and a roof turret. Both buildings complement Ingenried’s church art with examples from other parts of the municipality.

Outdoor pool and Geißtal Trail

Ingenried’s outdoor pool offers relaxation and swimming fun for all ages. It is located away from the road between Ingenried and Erbenschwang. This adds a very different option to a visit focused on St. George’s: swimming and relaxing at the pool.

The Geißtal Trail connects Ingenried and Sachsenried and crosses the valley from which it takes its name. This easy hike is 2.6 kilometres long, takes about 41 minutes and includes 49 metres of ascent. The distance, approximate walking time and ascent provide a concrete framework for planning your day. Check the latest route details before setting out.

The municipality of Ingenried also offers circular hiking trails and the Auerbergland@venture route.

Weilheim-Schongau as a wider travel area

The wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau, part of the Pfaffenwinkel travel region, offers further cultural and nature-related attractions. The Wieskirche near Steingaden has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Dominikus Zimmermann built it between 1745 and 1754. Church services, summer concerts and quiet contemplation offer different reasons to visit; check the dates of the summer concerts in advance, as they may vary.

The Penzberg Mining Museum offers another perspective on the region’s history. It preserves the memory of the local bituminous coal mining industry, which operated from 1796 to 1966, and offers multilingual guided tours for international visitors, families and school groups. In the wider Weilheim-Schongau area, sacred art and industrial history thus provide contrasting cultural highlights.

The hiking options can also be compared: the Geißtal Trail in Ingenried is 2.6 kilometres long, while the approximately 5-kilometre Erdfunkstelle hiking trail in Raisting is almost twice as long. It starts at Raisting railway station and follows a circular route through the satellite earth station, past the large satellite dishes and the Radom industrial monument with its historic Antenna 1. The two hikes therefore offer different distances and themes within the wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau.

If you would also like to include the Wieskirche, Raisting or Penzberg in your travel plans, you can consider the wider Weilheim-Schongau area. This lets you choose where to search based on the experiences that matter for your stay.
