Altenstadt brings together sacred art in the Basilica of St. Michael and reconstructions of historic roads at Via Claudia-Platz. This highlights two distinct themes: Romanesque works and the history of military, trade, and pilgrimage routes. This provides a clear starting point for planning your trip and deciding which interests to prioritize during your stay.

Romanesque Art in the Basilica of St. Michael

The Basilica of St. Michael houses a monumental Romanesque crucifix dating from the church’s construction. It was carved from two limewood trunks crossed at shoulder height. The work is 3.25 meters long and has an arm span of 3.18 meters. It is popularly known as “The Great God of Altenstadt.” The measurements give the monumental impression a concrete scale; at the same time, the work is distinguished by its construction from two crossed trunks.

The basilica also contains an eight-meter-high fresco of St. Christopher dating from the church’s construction. It was discovered in 1994 and subsequently uncovered. The fresco is one of the oldest Romanesque depictions of St. Christopher of its kind in Bavaria. Another work is the baptismal font: it is considered one of the most significant Romanesque baptismal fonts in the German-speaking world, and its reliefs depict the rite of baptism. Together, the crucifix, mural, and relief represent different forms of Romanesque art in one place.

Reconstructions of Historic Roads at Via Claudia-Platz

Via Claudia-Platz features reconstructions of an original imperial military road and a medieval trade and pilgrimage route. The two road scenes point to different historical functions: the military road is set alongside the trade and pilgrimage route. Those interested in how routes developed will find a different way to explore the town’s history here than in the basilica—not through works of art, but through reconstructions of two types of road.

More to Explore in the Wider Weilheim-Schongau Destination

The wider Weilheim-Schongau destination also offers further cultural and scenic themes. Weilheim-Schongau is bordered by the Lech to the west, the Ammer flows through its central area, and the Loisach runs along its eastern boundary. The destination is in the Pfaffenwinkel travel region. This geographical context expands the focus on Altenstadt to include the wider region.

The Wieskirche near Steingaden is in the wider Weilheim-Schongau destination. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and was built by Dominikus Zimmermann from 1745 to 1754. Church services, summer concerts, and quiet contemplation are among the reasons to visit; dates may vary. The Wieskirche thus combines a clearly dated building history with a range of religious and musical visitor experiences.

The Penzberg Mining Museum offers a different perspective on cultural history. It preserves the memory of the local pitch-coal mining industry, which operated from 1796 to 1966. Tours in several languages are available for international visitors, families, and school groups. In contrast to Altenstadt’s sacred works of art, the focus here is on the history of mining and industrial work.

Routes and landscapes also offer different experiences across the wider Weilheim-Schongau destination. The approximately five-kilometer Erdfunkstelle hiking trail starts at Raisting railway station and forms a circular route through the satellite earth station, passing large satellite dishes and the Radom industrial monument with historic Antenna 1. The Raisting Radom is Germany’s first commercially operated satellite earth station. The six-kilometer Schwarzlaichmoor themed trail offers a different focus: information boards accompany the route through the adjacent moorland, and the starting point is the Hetten inn. The trails differ both in theme and stated length.

For winter activities, the wider Weilheim-Schongau destination also offers the approximately seven-kilometer Filzloipe trail in Hohenpeißenberg. In winter, it is groomed for skating and classic cross-country skiing; availability depends on winter conditions. A circular hike featuring technology and industrial heritage therefore contrasts with a moorland route and a seasonal cross-country skiing option—different choices for planning your trip, with no fixed order implied.

When choosing where to stay, you can first decide whether Romanesque art in Altenstadt should be your main focus or whether you would like to include other themes in the wider Weilheim-Schongau destination.
