Pähl combines a rich church history with sweeping views of the Alps, when the weather cooperates. In good weather, the panorama reaches the Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains, including the Zugspitze, as well as the Lechtal Alps. St. Laurentius brings together several centuries of architectural and artistic history. When planning your visit, it is also important to know the clear restrictions: Pähler Gorge is permanently closed.

St. Laurentius: Several building phases, one church interior

The lower level of the church tower, dating from 1159, has been preserved. The Baroque nave was built between 1723 and 1734 to plans by Wessobrunn master builder Joseph Schmuzer. The present interior furnishings were added from 1770 onward in the Rococo style, probably by Wessobrunn stucco artist J. M. Merck. The building’s history thus brings together a preserved tower level, a Baroque church building, and later Rococo furnishings.

The individual artworks and architectural features also tell of different periods: the ceiling paintings by Wessobrunn painter Johann Baader depict scenes from the life of Saint Lawrence. A Late Gothic crucifix hangs on the south wall of the nave. The crypt chapel on the south side of the church was built in 1765; a photographic copy of the so-called Pähler Altar was added there in 1984. The colorful windows, three altarpieces, organ, and Lourdes grotto at the entrance date from the 19th century.

A local tradition links the church to an event in 1763: Pähl is said to have been struck by a gall fever epidemic at the time. The faithful attributed the disease’s overcoming to a Vesperbild (Pietà) created around 1440, which they venerated as a miraculous image. The story is part of the town’s traditional history of religious devotion; it has been handed down as a tradition.

Copper art and a diverse collection

Its collection includes artworks and everyday objects dating from prehistory to Art Deco. The exhibition focuses primarily on Central European everyday objects from the 17th to the 19th century. The copper exhibition is complemented by paintings, prints, and sculptures on related themes.

Alpine panorama and a closed gorge

Pähler Gorge lies on the eastern edge of Pähl, with a species-rich ravine forest along the Burgleitenbach stream. It is permanently closed and not open to the public. In some areas, there is a high to very high risk of rockfall and boulder falls, landslides, and flooding. Do not enter the gorge. The weather-dependent panoramic views of the mountains and the closed gorge are therefore two very different aspects of getting your bearings in Pähl’s landscape: good weather is the stated prerequisite only for the views; the gorge remains permanently closed.

Getting here and regional cultural contrasts

Pähl can be reached via the B 2 between Starnberg, Weilheim, and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The nearest railway stations are Herrsching, Raisting, Tutzing, and Weilheim i. OB. This allows you to factor your mode of transport into your accommodation plans without assuming a particular travel time.

The Pfaffenwinkel travel region is part of the wider Weilheim-Schongau destination. The Wieskirche near Steingaden offers a different architectural focus: it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 and was built by Dominikus Zimmermann from 1745 to 1754. Worship services, summer concerts, and quiet contemplation are among the experiences available there; concert dates may vary. For families interested in industrial history, the Penzberg Mining Museum preserves the memory of the local pitch coal mining industry, which operated from 1796 to 1966. The museum offers multilingual tours for international visitors, families, and school groups.
