Discover Polling: the collegiate church, monastery and art
Accommodation in Polling
Polling brings together church art, exhibitions and local culture in a compact area. At the collegiate church of St. Salvator, a precisely dated ensemble of figures and a pulpit take centre stage; the Fischerbau adds installation art. The Polling Museum and Heilig Kreuz Monastery provide further cultural venues. You can plan your stay around whether you are particularly interested in sacred art, exhibitions or a guided tour.
Art and culture in the town centre
At the triumphal arch of Polling’s collegiate church of St. Salvator, a statue of the Madonna dating from 1526 stands opposite the pulpit from 1705. The statue and the pulpit are from different centuries and face one another in the church. The Polling Museum is in the centre of Polling, and Heilig Kreuz Monastery is located in the town centre. This places several of the cultural venues mentioned in the town-centre area.
Exhibitions and installations at the Fischerbau
The Fischerbau has been used for exhibitions since 2003. Dan Flavin’s blue-and-red installation “untitled 1970” can be viewed there from October to April by prior arrangement by telephone or email. The Fischerbau is at Weilheimer Str. 12–14, 82398 Polling. If you choose the installation as a specific reason for your trip, take account of the seasonal visiting period and arrange your visit in advance. Confirm the arrangement before travelling.
The Fischerbau is also home to the Dream House by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela. If you are considering a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
The STOA169 Hall is nearby, about 2 km from the centre of Polling. It provides another point of reference for exploring beyond the town centre.
Plan tours and concerts
Group tours are offered at the Minis-Raritäten-Stadl; coffee and homemade cake are available on request. The offer is for groups. If you are planning a tour, confirm the details with the venue. The Polling collegiate church regularly hosts concerts featuring renowned organists from Germany and abroad. Check specific dates in advance.
The building of the former dairy stands on Jörg-Ganghofer-Straße in Polling and is partly presented as a dairy museum. Together, these different offerings provide a range of ways to plan your trip: a seasonal art visit arranged in advance, a group tour or a concert on a specific date.
When looking for accommodation in Polling, your reason for visiting may also determine when you travel. For the Fischerbau, the season and prior arrangements matter; for a tour, the group requirement; and for a concert, the specific date.
Weilheim-Schongau as a wider travel destination
The Pfaffenwinkel travel region lies within the wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau. The Lech marks Weilheim-Schongau’s western boundary, the Ammer flows through its central area, and the Loisach runs along its eastern border. These landscape features provide a broader context beyond Polling.
Cultural attractions in the wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau also include the Wieskirche near Steingaden. Dominikus Zimmermann built it between 1745 and 1754; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. The Wieskirche invites visitors to attend services, summer concerts and spend time in quiet contemplation. If you are planning a visit, check the specific dates in advance, especially if you are interested in a summer concert.
A different option is the approximately 5-kilometre Erdfunkstelle walking trail in Raisting. It starts at Raisting railway station and follows a circular route through the satellite earth station, past the large satellite dishes and the Radom industrial heritage monument with its historic Antenna 1. Trail conditions may vary. The wider destination of Weilheim-Schongau therefore offers a choice of themes, from church art to the history of technology and a route through the satellite earth station.
