Weilheim in Upper Bavaria combines historic churches and art in public spaces with paths through the floodplain and the Hardt landscape. You can shape your stay around a wide variety of discoveries: architectural history and collections, a digital art trail, or nature and views. The town offers plenty to explore, without requiring you to fit culture and landscape into the same day’s itinerary.

Churches, art and traces of the town’s history

St. Salvator and St. Sebastian Cemetery Church stands on Betberg. It was built in 1449 on a former plague cemetery on the outskirts of the town at the time. In the centre of Weilheim, on Marienplatz, stands the town parish church of the Assumption of Mary. It was designed by Hans Krumpper and built in the early Baroque style from 1624 to 1628. It is one of the largest architectural monuments in the Pfaffenwinkel region. The two churches offer different historical perspectives: one leads into the town’s 15th-century history, the other into early Baroque architecture.

Founded in 1882, the town museum is one of Bavaria’s oldest municipal museums. Its collection includes sculptures dating from the 15th century onwards, paintings, furniture, decorative arts and religious artefacts. A special focus is on works by the Weilheim School of Sculpture. As you walk through Weilheim, you will come across further traces of the past: a well-preserved section of the old town wall borders the path, and a large mural in Pöltnerstraße marks the former site of Pöltner Gate.

You can also explore the town interactively. The “Who Will Save the Golden Chalice?” rally uses the free Actionbound app to guide you through Weilheim’s town centre. It combines getting around the town with a playful challenge. If you are interested in art objects, you can opt for the sculpture trail instead.

Sculpture trail, floodplain and views

The sculpture trail starts in Weilheim’s town centre and leads into the floodplain. Here, art and nature come together in an audio experience. The free Actionbound app lets you access audio clips, videos and photos about the artworks. The tour takes about an hour and can be enjoyed at your own pace—a manageable outing for exploring together, with digital content accompanying the artworks.

The floodplain is just a few steps from the centre of Weilheim. There, ponds, a barefoot path and a Kneipp pool bring together nature, exercise and relaxation. For a different perspective on the surroundings, the Gögerl Loop starts at Gögerl; there are viewpoints along the route, with impressive mountain panoramas. These destinations offer different options for your plans: an art and nature experience close to the centre, or a walk focused on views and scenery.

The extensive Hardt Loop takes you further into the countryside. For much of its length, it passes through the Hardt, with raised and lowland bogs, nutrient-poor grassland and hay meadows, and extensive forests. The Hardt is home to the adder; in June and July, red-violet marsh gladioli bloom there. Both species are considered highly endangered. Those interested in nature and its distinctive habitats will find different themes here than on the paths through the town centre and floodplain.

The Chapel Loop runs east from Weilheim’s town centre towards the Hardt landscapes, then returns to Weilheim via Haunshofen and Wielenbach. Along the way, you can discover small and large churches and chapels. This route thus connects town and countryside along a clearly described course.

Market and festivals throughout the year

The light art festival takes place every two years in Weilheim’s town centre, with internationally renowned artists taking part. French Week is held annually over the extended first weekend of July. These two events add their own cultural highlights to the calendar, with different timings to consider when planning your trip.

The weekly market is also part of town life: it takes place on Marienplatz on Tuesdays and Fridays from 08:00 to 13:00. The stalls offer everything from local produce and Mediterranean specialities to tropical fruit and organic products, as well as cheese, fish and seafood. The market and events add further ways to experience Weilheim alongside its churches, collections and trails.

When planning your days together, you can easily weigh up the options: local history and the market, an app-based tour lasting about an hour, or the Hardt landscape with its distinctive habitats.
