Meinheim combines a distinctive geological landscape with trails to explore on foot and by bike. The tufa terraces give the Meinheim countryside a clearly defined natural feature: there are three geotopes designated as special natural monuments, at Wolfsbronn, Kurzenaltheim and Oberweiler. All three are tufa terraces formed by calcareous spring water.

The Stone Channel at Wolfsbronn is a tufa formation over which spring water from the forest flows into the valley. It is more than 120 metres long and up to 1.60 metres high. Its length and height make it an impressive natural monument in its own right; it is also part of a group of three separate channels at the named locations. The Gelber Berg borders directly on the municipality of Meinheim or extends into it with its foothills, adding another striking landmark to the landscape.

Hiking trails with different themes

The Mill Hiking Trail was created in spring 2016 to commemorate historic sites in the countryside. Its theme combines hiking with a look at the history of the local landscape. The Ecumenical Hiking Trail through the Heidenheim Monastery Landscape offers a different route: it continues via Markt Berolzheim to Meinheim. If you are comparing routes as part of your planning, the two differ above all in their stated focus and route.

A network of hiking and cycling trails explores the landscape around Meinheim. You can first decide whether you would prefer to focus your stay on hiking or cycling, without having to commit to a particular route length. If you plan to follow the Ecumenical Hiking Trail, it is advisable to check the current signage before setting out. Conditions can also change on other individual routes.

The Hahnenkamm area’s traditional orchard region extends across seven towns. The listed sequence runs from Treuchtlingen via Wettelsheim, Markt Berolzheim, Meinheim, Sammenheim and Spielberg to Gnotzheim. Meinheim is therefore part of a broader regional context that spans several towns and offers an additional perspective on the landscape alongside its individual natural features.

In the wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen

The wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen offers additional nature and cultural themes. The Limes runs for around 40 kilometres across the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The Roman Museum in Weißenburg displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure trove and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. Weißenburg’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths; the Biriciana fort has been partially reconstructed.

The Hohenzollern Fortress of Wülzburg offers a historical focus of its own: the former Ansbach fortress stands above Weißenburg on the highest hilltop in the southern Franconian Jura, at 630 metres, and is a monument to Renaissance fortress architecture. Guided tours are offered there from May to October, weather permitting. Before your visit, check whether a tour is taking place on your chosen date.

The district also offers other options for longer active routes. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail runs for 200 kilometres along the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the Altmühltal Nature Park. The Altmühltal Cycle Path runs for around 160 kilometres from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the nature park. These routes differ both in mode of travel and in length, providing a different planning framework from the network of hiking and cycling trails around Meinheim.
