Muhr a.See combines nature-related attractions centred on bird migration and Lake AltmĂĽhlsee with a distinctive local history. A bird island, interactive exhibitions and trails sit alongside a gate tower, church and moated castle. The annual AltmĂĽhlsee Festival, held every summer, is also part of what the town has to offer. When planning your trip, you can choose between nature, culture or a mix of both.

Bird migration and nature knowledge

The bird island near Muhr a.See, covering more than 200 hectares, is one of Bavaria’s most important protected areas for migratory birds. The island also has an interactive nature trail. The protected area and the trail offer two different perspectives: the bird island’s importance for migratory birds and an interactive way to explore nature. For travellers particularly interested in bird migration, this is a distinctive highlight in Muhr a.See.

The exhibitions also explore nature and the lake. The permanent exhibition “Lake Altmühlsee Habitat – The Fascination of Bird Migration” at the LBV Altmühlsee Environmental Station in Altenmuhr presents the formation of Lake Altmühlsee, the water transfer project and bird migration using interactive models. The Altmühlsee Information Centre also has an interactive-model exhibition with the same name. The subject matter thus ranges from the protected area to the history of the lake and bird migration. There is also a boat landing stage at the Muhr a.See lakeside centre.

Local history in towers, churches and a castle

The Muhr Gate Tower is the town’s landmark and part of its fortifications. The half-timbered gatehouse is another architectural landmark: on the return leg to the LBV Environmental Station, cycle route Stork Trail 2 passes through it. In Neuenmuhr, St James’s Church was built as a chancel-tower church by Joachim Christoph von Lentersheim between 1618 and 1622. The original Altenmuhr moated castle dates back to the 12th century. Together, these buildings highlight different aspects of local history—from fortifications and church architecture to the historic castle.

Neuenmuhr is also home to the Stork Information Centre: the municipality and the LBV jointly set up this information centre in the renovated old weigh house next to St James’s Church. During the summer months, the centre is open to visitors during the day. Check current local information before visiting. The Altmühlsee Festival takes place every summer in Muhr a.See; if the date matters for your trip, it is worth checking the latest festival dates.

Choose a focus for your trip

There are several ways to choose a theme for your trip: the bird island, nature trail and exhibition focus on nature and bird migration, while the gate tower, church and moated castle showcase local history. An interactive stork-themed cycle route offers another activity in Muhr a.See.
