Raitenbuch: Church Art, Ponds and Mining History
Accommodation in Raitenbuch
Raitenbuch combines striking church art with a history of ore mining, a swimming pond and the Limes Cycle Route. Its varied attractions make the town a destination for anyone looking to combine culture with time outdoors.
Church Art from Several Centuries
In Raitenbuch, the high altar of the pilgrimage church of St. Blaise features Late Gothic carvings: Christ holds the globe, accompanied by figures of the twelve apostles. The organ dates from around 1900. Together, the altar and organ represent different periods in the church’s furnishings.
The branch church of St. Margaret in Bechthal, also within the municipality of Raitenbuch, combines different architectural and artistic styles. It has Romanesque upper storeys and a Baroque chancel arch. Distinctive details include Renaissance sacrament niches dating from 1520, designed by Loy Hering as shallow wall panels. There is also a crucifix from the same year and three tombstones dating from 1524, 1463 and 1450. The architecture, sacred art and tombs provide different historical points of reference.
Swimming Pond, Mining and Cycle Route
In the Raitenbuch Forest, limonite ore was mined primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries at the “Grobschwarth” mine. This mining history offers a different perspective on the town’s past alongside its church art.
Bechthaler Weiher lies below the castle ruins. Its facilities as a swimming pond include a playground and sunbathing lawn. Alongside the historic attractions, it offers a place to enjoy time by the water and outdoors.
The Limes Cycle Route runs along the section from Weißenburg across the plateau to Raitenbuch. You can follow this route across the plateau on your cycling trip. Together with the history of the mine and the churches, it makes for a mix of cycling, local history and a swimming pond.
Roman Heritage in the Wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen Travel Region
In the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen travel region, the Limes crosses the district for around 40 kilometres; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure find and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. Weißenburg’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths. The Biriciana fort has been partially reconstructed; elsewhere in the district, watchtowers, forts and fragments of bath complexes also bear witness to Roman history.
Another historic highlight of the wider travel region is the Wülzburg fortress above Weißenburg. This former Ansbach Hohenzollern fortress stands on the highest hilltop in the southern Franconian Jura, at 630 metres, and is considered an impressive example of Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. Guided tours are offered from May to October, weather permitting. Check the dates before your trip.
Routes and Water in the Wider Travel Region
For hikers, the Via Biriciana follows old Roman roads to the Limes. The Altmühltal Panorama Trail covers a much greater distance: it runs for over 200 kilometres along the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through the Altmühltal Nature Park. The Altmühltal Cycle Route links the same endpoints over around 160 kilometres. On the water, the nearly 120-kilometre Altmühl canoe route runs from Gunzenhausen to Dietfurt/Töging; navigation conditions can vary by season.
Water activities also vary across the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen travel region: water sports are generally possible on the lakes, but on Igelsbachsee only as part of the permitted public use. Altmühlsee is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. On the roughly 120-hectare Vogelinsel, the Bavarian Society for the Protection of Birds offers ornithological tours; check availability before your trip. In winter, the cross-country ski trail network maintained by the Weißenburg section of the German Alpine Club covers a total of 48 kilometres and includes four trails that can be combined freely. The trails are groomed for both classic and skating styles.
When choosing accommodation in Raitenbuch, consider which of these highlights you want to shape your trip: local churches, mining history, the swimming pond and cycle route, or additional cultural and nature experiences in the wider travel region.
