In Zell a.Main, a cycling route, walking trails and historic cultural sites come together. The Main Cycle Route, which is over 330 km long, passes directly through the village. There are also three signposted walks in the historic village centre and two circular hiking trails above Zell. When planning, you can consider whether you would like to devote your stay primarily to cycling, local history, walking or attending an event.

Cycling route and historic sites

Oberzell Abbey invites you to stop and take a guided tour of the monastery rooms. If you would like to plan your visit around a tour, check in advance whether one is taking place and when. The Protestant Church of Reconciliation also welcomes visitors as a cycling-friendly church. The two sites offer different cultural points of interest to consider when planning your trip.

An original, preserved sukkah is located at Judenhof 1 a and belongs to the municipality of Zell a. Main. The Unterzell sukkah documents almost 100 years of the Rosenbaum family’s life and work during the difficult period of Jewish emancipation. It brings a specific part of local history into focus.

Among the historic features in Zell that are visible and protected for public access are 18th-century wall paintings, discovered and uncovered during a renovation, original stucco from the Echter period and a Renaissance portal. Also found are monastery courtyard flagstones in the forecourt of the rooms, as well as an old kitchen area with a chimney flue and evidence of a clay bread oven. The features range from paintings and stucco to architectural traces of everyday life.

The water museum in the “Rose” inn is located in an excavated old well chamber. It presents the local history of the municipality and the history of the Zell springs. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Walks and circular hiking trails

There are three signposted walks in the historic village centre, where you can explore Zell’s culture on foot. Above Zell a. Main, two circular hiking trails of different lengths run through the water protection area: the Water Education Trail and the Nature Education Trail. Their location and format already set them apart from the walks in the historic village centre. When planning your day, you can choose between local culture in the built-up village centre and two circular trails above the village. Before setting out, check the local signs and current trail conditions.

Cultural events throughout the year

The Zell Cultural Mile takes place every two years in the historic village centre, along the main street. Artists can present some of their works in private rooms. The Laurentius Festival, the associations’ village festival, is also held every two years, on the last weekend in June in the town hall courtyard. If one of these events is important to your trip, check your plans against the current dates and programme.

The Zell am Main Cultural Working Group organises events in the Kulturkeller at least once a month. Visitors can regularly enjoy concerts, cabaret performances and exhibitions there. If you are planning a stay focused on live performances or exhibitions, it is worth checking the current event listings. The recurring cultural events and signposted walks offer different ways to choose when to travel.

Plan your stay

When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your stay: if your trip is tied to a cultural event, current event dates are the main consideration; if you are interested in local history, the sukkah, historic features and water museum offer possible themes. If you mainly want to spend time outdoors, you can choose between walks in the historic village centre, circular hiking trails above Zell and the Main Cycle Route as a regional route.
