Veitshöchheim: Rococo Garden, Main River and History
Accommodation in Veitshöchheim
Veitshöchheim combines a preserved Rococo garden with architectural and local history, Jewish remembrance culture and activities along the Main riverbank. This makes the town an interesting destination if you want to combine historical themes with walks through vineyards and leisure activities on the Main.
Castle, Garden and Local History
Veitshöchheim Palace was built in 1680/82 under Prince-Bishop von Dernbach and expanded in 1749/53 by Balthasar Neumann, the architect of Würzburg Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rococo Garden in Veitshöchheim, surrounding the former summer palace of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, has been preserved in the Rococo style. The palace and garden thus offer distinct points of interest within the history of the estate. An exhibition on the garden’s history in the palace’s ground floor adds historical context to the designed landscape.
The parish church of St. Vitus also connects local history with specific works of art. It is dedicated to the town’s patron saint. The high altar, dating from 1693, depicts the martyrdom of St. Vitus; the left side altar, from 1816, is dedicated to the life and work of the local saint Bilhildis. The two altars thus illustrate different local associations with saints and the periods in which they were created.
Jewish Life and Remembrance
The Jewish Cultural Museum and the synagogue document and preserve traces of Jewish life in Veitshöchheim spanning more than three centuries. Redesigned in 2019, the museum shows and explains how Jewish families lived in the “village setting” and how that life came to an end. A genizah was discovered in the synagogue, built in 1730; the Veitshöchheim Genizah is one of the most extensive in the German-speaking world. Together, these topics offer another distinct perspective on local history.
Leisure on the Main Riverbank and Routes Through Wine Country
The focus along the Main riverbank is on leisure and exercise. Family-friendly facilities there include a large playground with the three-masted ship “Santa Maria” and the “Amazonas” jungle camp, exercise equipment, a Kneipp foot-treading pool and a miniature golf course. These play and activity options complement the town’s historical attractions; families can give them different priorities when planning their day.
If you’d like to explore the wine-growing landscape along a route, consider the Bocksbeutel Trail: it runs from Veitshöchheim via Thüngersheim to Retzbach, covering about 12 kilometres through the vineyards and offering views of the Main Valley. These include views of the local recreation area with its bathing lakes, as well as of Erlabrunn and Veitshöchheim. Vineyard tours in Veitshöchheim, Thüngersheim, Erlabrunn and Retzbach or Retzstadt offer a different focus. They provide insights into viticulture, climate, geology, history and wine, with views of the Main Valley and occasionally the heights of the Spessart and Rhön. You can weigh up a route with an approximate stated length against guided insights into different wine-related topics.
Exhibitions, Guided Tours and Trip Planning
The Mainfrankensäle are also part of Veitshöchheim’s cultural profile: for more than 30 years, they have hosted the televised “Fastnacht in Franken” carnival show. The permanent exhibition “The World of Fastnacht in Franken” in the foyer offers insights into the background and production of the BR programme at its original venue. On the outskirts of Veitshöchheim, the Bavarian State Research Center for Viticulture and Horticulture also offers themed tours, for example on perennials and woody plants, bedding and balcony plants, vegetable growing and Franconian viticulture. Access rules for exhibitions may vary, as may booking options and availability of public tours. Check current visiting and booking options if you plan to include these activities in your itinerary.
When choosing accommodation, your preferred focus can help guide you: the palace and garden offer architectural and garden history, the Bocksbeutel Trail takes you through the vineyards, and the Main riverbank offers play and leisure activities. Let your search reflect which side of Veitshöchheim interests you most during your stay.
