Lieberose: Heath, Wilderness and Baroque History
Accommodation in Lieberose
Lieberose combines distinctive nature themes with a diverse architectural and urban history. Nature and trail highlights include summer dragonfly watching by the marsh, a loop around Lake Bergsee, and stops focused on darkness and orientation. They are joined by a Baroque palace, a historic church square and a museum covering the history of the town, palace and forestry.
Nature and Trails
The Lieberose Desert covers 550 hectares and is considered Germany’s largest open-land area. It offers a different focus from the marsh at Butzener Bagen. The dragonfly trail passes by the marsh, where numerous dragonflies can be observed in summer. The Lieberose Heath, the Lieberose Desert and the succession park offer hiking trails and a nature trail. This lets you choose between open landscapes, marsh and dragonflies, or a nature experience centred on an educational trail.
The Wilderness Trail offers a 2-kilometre loop around Lake Bergsee and the 15-kilometre Käuzchenweg. You can choose based on your preferred distance; also check trail conditions before your visit. The Star Trail has a different focus: its information and experience stations explore darkness, nocturnal animals and the role of celestial bodies in navigation. Your choice can therefore be guided by two different criteria: distance on the Wilderness Trail or subject matter on the Star Trail.
Palace and Church Square
Lieberose Palace is an 18th-century complex with four wings, rebuilt from a 14th-century moated castle. It is one of Brandenburg’s largest Baroque palaces. Its architectural history connects a medieval origin with the later Baroque complex. The 34-hectare palace park includes paths and a palace pond, adding a landscape feature to the architecture.
The ruins of the town church stand beside the country church on Lieberose’s historic church square. The country church preserves furnishings from the former church. It also houses a baptismal font dating from 1603 and a Renaissance epitaph from 1597 for Joachim the Rich of the Schulenburg family. An epitaph is a memorial; alongside the baptismal font, this Renaissance work offers another point of reference to the period.
Town and Forestry History
The Darre Museum covers the history of Lieberose, its palace and local forestry. It also preserves restored equipment from the former drying and extraction facility. As well as offering insight into architectural history, the museum provides a glimpse into forestry history and a former technical facility.
