A historic rock garden, a Late Gothic hall church and an observatory on a water tower: Herzberg (Elster) brings together botanical education, architectural history and science with nature experiences. Its varied attractions make it easy to plan a stay around your interests—whether you are especially interested in plants, animals, architecture or gazing into space.

Plant Knowledge and Garden History

The Herzberg Botanical Garden was established in the early 20th century as a school and demonstration garden for botanical education. Today, it teaches visitors about plants, habitats, biodiversity, climate change and sustainable garden design. Its educational programs are aimed at children, young people, adults and older people. Tours and group programs should be arranged in advance.

A historic rock garden also illustrates the garden’s original design concept: its initial plan called for presenting alpine plant communities and those adapted to dry conditions. In this way, the garden brings contemporary educational topics together with a traditional garden design concept. If you are planning a group visit, it is worth arranging your preferred tour or group program well in advance.

Planetarium, Observatory and Architectural History

The Zeiss Planetarium offers a varied program for children and adults throughout the year. Check the current program to find a show that suits your visit. The observatory’s location offers another distinctive perspective on the night sky: it is situated 37 meters above ground, atop the water tower.

Herzberg’s architecture also makes its own distinctive impression. St. Mary’s Town Church is a three-aisled Late Gothic hall church. “Three-aisled” describes the layout of the church interior, while “Late Gothic” places its architecture in a particular period. Grochwitz Castle offers another glimpse of the past: most of its present-day structure dates from the 19th century.

Nature takes center stage in the park at Grochwitz Castle. Its ecotones, particularly the ponds, provide important habitats for amphibians and are home to an unusually wide variety of species. At Villa Marx, architectural and garden history come together: Carl Marx is believed to have had a Jugendstil villa with landscaped grounds built between 1906 and 1907 near the Niederlausitz station, opposite the town park. At the foot of the pavilion is a pond, edged by limestone terraces and an adjoining sunken garden.

Zoo and Active Experiences

Herzberg Zoo is set in a park-like landscape with mature trees and several ponds. Animals living there include lar gibbons, Bactrian camels and mouflons. As the animals kept at the zoo may change, it is a good idea to check which species are currently on view before your visit.

The ErlebnisWelt at ElsterPark offers another way to enjoy activities: a range of activity and adventure modules can be booked year-round for groups, school classes, children’s birthday parties and team-building events. Canoes, kayaks, trekking bikes, e-bikes and wheelchair bikes can also be rented at ElsterPark. There are different ways to get active, from booked group programs to renting specific equipment.

More Things to See in the Wider Elbe-Elster Destination

The wider Elbe-Elster destination also features individual attractions focused on industrial history. The F60 visitor mine is in Elbe-Elster district, south of Lichterfeld. Visitors can explore nearby Bergheider See by bike or Segway, or take a walk along its long beach. The Louise briquette factory in Domsdorf is the oldest surviving briquette factory in Europe. Plessa Power Station is one of Europe’s oldest lignite-fired power stations and has retained its original structure. Visitors can see authentic power station equipment from the 1920s there; the guided “Coal Trail” tour passes through the outdoor bunker, boiler house, turbine floor, control room and transformer area.
