In the Hohenlohe District, a landscape shaped by river valleys meets striking evidence of the past. The Limes runs in a perfectly straight line through the district, while monasteries, castles and historic townscapes each add their own character. If you enjoy cycling, there are numerous cycling routes to choose from.

River valleys, cycling routes and the Limes

Cyclists can explore a Hohenlohe hilly landscape framed by the deeply incised valleys of the Kocher, Jagst and Ohrn rivers. Numerous cycling routes offer the chance to discover the Hohenlohe District by bike; the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route passes through Krautheim.

The Limes also shapes the region’s appearance: this UNESCO World Heritage Site runs in a perfectly straight line through the Hohenlohe District. Three Limes viewing platforms offer sweeping views across the landscape. This brings together two sides of a visit—the open expanse of the hills and the historic trace that runs through the district.

Monasteries, castles and historic townscapes

In the Jagst Valley lies Schöntal Monastery. Its monastery church has an imposing Baroque double-tower façade. The cloister contains the tomb of the knight Götz von Berlichingen. The striking façade and the tomb offer different points of interest within the monastery.

A different townscape awaits in Forchtenberg: the town has a medieval character, an almost completely preserved town wall and numerous half-timbered houses. The Kocher river valley, along with the side valleys of the Kupfer and Sall rivers and the Wülfinger Bach, also shapes the landscape. An open-air cinema is held at the castle ruins, attracting several thousand visitors each year.

Neuenstein Castle brings together different periods of construction: the Hohenstaufen moated castle was expanded into a magnificent Renaissance residence in the 16th century. The permanent exhibition presents the inventories of seven Hohenlohe castles. Architecture enthusiasts can explore both the castle’s development and the furnishings of other Hohenlohe residences.

In Krautheim, the Hohenstaufen castle rises above the town, with a 28-metre-high keep. The climb is rewarded with views over the Jagst Valley. The Johanniter Museum explores the history of the Order of St John. The castle, views and museum thus offer different highlights for a visit to the town.

Wine, food and events

Visitors can buy and sample wine and spirits directly from Hohenlohe winemakers and distillers. Which producers take part varies. The marketplace in Öhringen is a dedicated venue for wine: it hosts the Hohenlohe Wine Festival.

The Künzelsau Castle Stetten Castle Festival has been staged as open-air theatre in the moat of Schloss Stetten for more than 30 years, always in late July or early August. As the exact dates vary, it is advisable to check them before planning. In Forchtenberg, the open-air cinema at the castle ruins adds another special venue to the choice of events.

Choose the right base for your trip

Events and wine may also play a part in choosing where to stay. Compare the location of a particular accommodation with the places you actually want to visit; this lets you base your choice on your own travel plans rather than assuming that one base will suit every activity.
