Discover Sindringen: the Kocher, Roman times and pottery
Accommodation in Sindringen
Set in a valley on the Kocher, Sindringen combines a distinctive townscape with traces of Roman and medieval history. A completely preserved town wall, the town mill and a weir shape the town’s scenery.
Kocher scenery and trails
Sindringen lies on the Kocher; the weir, the town mill and the completely preserved town wall are part of the town’s scenery. Hiking trails in the surrounding area offer views of woods, fields and the Kocher Valley. For cycling tours, Sindringen is on the 332-kilometre Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route and also on the Limes Cycle Route. Those weighing up different activities will find a range of themes: routes through the region, views of the valley and history along the Limes. The Kocher at Sindringen is navigable at least for canoes.
Roman traces and historic buildings
The Roman past is anchored in several specific locations. A small Roman fort was built within the present-day town of Sindringen to monitor the Kocher and the Roman imperial border that crossed it. Foundations of a Roman watchtower can be seen above the junction of SalltalstraĂźe and KochertalstraĂźe. The Upper German-Raetian Limes also passed Sindringen and runs via Ă–hringen into the Jagst Valley.
The Holy Cross Church is Sindringen’s oldest building. It was built around 1100 on the foundations of a small Roman fort. During its interior renovation in 1963/64, 14th-century frescoes were uncovered. Thus, different periods come together in one building, while the fort and watchtower offer further insights into the town’s Roman history.
Sindringen Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1328. It was once a castle and was probably the seat of the Lords of Sindringen. In the town mill, the “good parlour” and part of the kitchen of the last miller’s family, the Kuhns, have been preserved in their original form. The church, the castle’s history and the mill show different sides of the town’s past, without any one period defining the entire visit.
Pottery trail and market
The more than two-kilometre-long pottery trail explores the craft of pottery at 15 stations. This gives the town a focus on craftsmanship alongside its Roman and medieval traces. Visitors to the Sindringen Pottery Market can expect a diverse selection of artisan pottery, with up to 70 potters. During the market, a pottery exhibition with changing themes can also be seen in the former town hall. If you would like to plan your stay specifically around the market, check the event dates in advance.
Historic attractions in Forchtenberg
Forchtenberg itself also offers further historical and cultural attractions. Its medieval old town has completely preserved town walls. Forchtenberg Castle Ruins include a large vaulted cellar and an observation tower; the Diebsturm is the southwest corner tower of the town wall. The cemetery church in Forchtenberg has 14th-century frescoes.
The Hohenlohe Dialect Trail runs from Forchtenberg bus station to the Pachthofscheuer in Ernsbach. Along the route, twelve signs display texts arranged by theme in the Hohenlohe dialect, with translations into standard German. The Hans and Sophie Scholl Trail is a themed educational trail in Forchtenberg. The town of Forchtenberg established the Kern Museum in the Kern House, with a section on local history; visits are arranged through the mayor’s office. For many years, the castle ruins served as the setting for the “Rock in the Ruins” rock festival, founded by Pastor Wolfgang Wilhelm and the Protestant Church of Forchtenberg.
