Ubstadt-Weiher: Nature Trails, Wine and Roman History
Accommodation in Ubstadt-Weiher
Ubstadt-Weiher combines experiences in nature with wine trails and traces of a long local history. The nature trail leads through sunken lanes to the edge of the forest, while the Zeutern wine trail features stops about grape varieties. In Stettfeld, a circular route combines a hike with a visit to the Roman Museum; the Kraichradweg also passes through the Bruch nature reserve there. There is also Hardtsee lake, with a sunbathing lawn and opportunities for exercise and relaxation. For your planning, it helps to decide what you would like to focus on each day before looking for accommodation as a base.
Hiking between sunken lanes and forest
The nature trail in the district of Zeutern is about four kilometres long. It passes through three sunken lanes, runs along the edge of the forest and offers views towards the Rhine Plain and orchards. Eighteen information boards cover geology, plant and animal life, and ecology. The trail thus combines scenic views with information about nature; it is also described as a family outing in nature.
The Sunken Lanes and Heights circular trail incorporates the nature trail, Hirschhohle and Hochberghohle. Rest areas are located by Paulus Chapel and at the Eisengrubenwald barbecue area, which also has a playground. These named stops and rest areas give the circular trail its own points of interest, so you need not limit your outing to the nature trail alone.
You can reach the nature trail by taking S-Bahn line S31 to Zeutern station; from there, the footpath leads through the historic town centre. Check the connection before setting out, as public transport information may change.
Cycling in the Kraichgau, nature in Stettfeld
The Kraichradweg follows the Kraichbach from its source in Sternenfels to an old arm of the Rhine near Ketsch. In Ubstadt-Weiher, the route reaches the western edge of the Kraichgau. In the district of Stettfeld, it passes through the Bruch nature reserve and along the renaturalised Kraichbach. This brings together the regional route of the cycle path and a specific nature area in Stettfeld—a useful distinction when planning your cycling stage.
Wine trail and architectural history
The Zeutern wine trail is a circular route that starts and ends at the Zeutern wine press house. Ten information boards stand among the vines. Each one focuses on a grape variety, its characteristics, origin and distinctive features. Those interested in winegrowing can therefore also use the trail as a themed walk: the stops draw attention to individual varieties and what distinguishes them from one another.
The wine press house is Ubstadt’s oldest building. It was built around 1600 as a tithe wine press for the Prince-Bishopric of Speyer and now serves as a cultural venue; it is also used for celebrations. St. Nicholas Church was built between 1440 and 1529 over the remains of an older, probably Romanesque church. Its altar has been preserved as the Old Choir. The history of present-day Stettfeld also goes back a long way: a Roman settlement was established there around 120 AD, and its inhabitants were mainly craftspeople and merchants.
Roman history and time at Hardtsee
The “In the Footsteps of the Romans” circular trail combines a hike with a visit to the Stettfeld Roman Museum. Groups can arrange guided tours in advance, including outside the museum’s opening hours. This makes it possible to combine the walk with a museum visit; guided tours must be arranged beforehand.
The Hardtsee leisure centre has a large bathing lake with excellent water quality. The leisure facility also includes a spacious sunbathing lawn and activities for relaxation and exercise. This offers different ways to spend the day by the water, either relaxing or being more active. As the availability of activities may change, check seasonal access to the bathing lake before travelling.
Public transport when choosing where to stay
Ubstadt-Weiher has nine S-Bahn stops and 17 bus stops. If you would like to take public transport into account when choosing accommodation, include this information in your planning and check the timetable for specific trips. This lets you consider how to get to your planned activities when choosing where to stay, without assuming that every accommodation option has the same transport connections.
